Texas Tribune Seeks Editor for Immigration, Environment, and Climate Coverage
The Texas Tribune, a leading source for news on Texas politics and public policy, is on the hunt for an editor to oversee coverage of three pivotal and rapidly evolving issues: immigration, environmental concerns, and climate change. This role will play a significant part in shaping Tribune’s reporting on the fluctuating landscape of immigration policy, the intensifying water crisis, the rise of data centers, and the ongoing impact of natural disasters.
We are searching for editors who possess the discernment to identify critical stories, an inquisitive nature to ask insightful questions, and a proven ability to guide reporters in producing relevant and impactful journalism. Candidates with deep expertise in these topics will be valued, but we equally welcome those who can grasp complex subjects, tell compelling stories, and uncover opportunities often overlooked. This editor will lead a talented team of three reporters, each working remotely from different regions across Texas. The role focuses on empowering these journalists to truly own their beats while staying attuned to current events and anticipating future challenges. This includes driving urgent news coverage, delivering responsible reporting, and pursuing ambitious investigative stories. We believe that robust investigative journalism emerges from reporters who have a firm grasp of the news landscape.
The successful candidate will collaborate with a skilled editorial team, working alongside those in the Audience, Visual, Data, and Product departments. Reporting directly to the News and National Affairs Editor, this editor will also manage and expand the Newsroom Fellowship program, fostering new talent and shaping the future of Texas journalism. This role requires a balance of mentoring seasoned reporters and nurturing emerging journalists within a dynamic and growth-focused newsroom.
Key responsibilities include strategizing our coverage priorities, ensuring a balanced mix of responsible journalism, and foundational reporting on the influential people and movements that drive policy debates. The editor will collaborate across departments to produce daily articles, long-term features, and data-driven content. They will also engage in public events and panel discussions, including those at the annual Texas Tribune Festival, and participate in media appearances on radio and television programs. Flexibility in working hours, including shifts on weekends and holidays, will be necessary based on news events.
Qualified applicants should have a background in editing or reporting on public policy, government, or similarly complex topics. The ability to quickly grasp intricate issues, identify key stories, and assist reporters in framing these narratives for broad audiences is essential. A passion for rigorous beat reporting, alongside expertise in editing, fact-checking, and AP style journalism, is also critical. As part of a collaborative newsroom culture, candidates should be adept at mentoring journalists at different career stages, while also demonstrating familiarity with Texas politics and governance.
This full-time role, based in Texas, offers a competitive salary starting at $100,000, commensurate with experience.
