Shooting Incident Involving ICE Agents in Biddeford Raises Concerns
A spokesperson for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has stated that the individual shot and killed by agents in Biddeford on Monday was attempting to escape the scene. The fatal incident occurred at the intersection of Poole Street and Hill Street.
The deceased was identified as a 26-year-old Colombian national, who, according to the Maine Immigrant Rights Coalition, was shot while in his vehicle. Senator Angus King from Maine reported that Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin informed him that the man was not the intended target of the ICE operation.
In a statement released Monday evening, an ICE spokesperson referred to the deceased as an “illegal alien” who was attempting to flee. According to ICE, on July 13, 2026, the agency had issued a final removal order and conducted surveillance of the individual’s last known address. The situation escalated when agents attempted to stop the vehicle he was in, leading to a confrontation where an officer discharged their weapon, resulting in the man’s death.
Initially, Senator King mentioned that Mullin noted the man had “weaponized” the vehicle, prompting at least one agent to fire. Fortunately, no other individuals were injured during the incident, although multiple state, federal, and local agencies responded to the scene, alongside protesters advocating for the man’s rights.
Federal agents concluded their investigation by 2:30 p.m. that day, leaving Biddeford without sharing specific details regarding the incident or the victim’s identity. Additionally, Senator Susan Collins reported that the Boston office of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) inspector general has begun an investigation, collaborating with the FBI.
As reported by Presente! in Maine, the young man was authorized to work in the United States and had received a Social Security number. In a joint statement, the Maine Immigrant Rights Coalition and Presente expressed their condolences, emphasizing the tragic loss of a member of the community. They called for a transparent investigation that provides clear answers regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.
This incident marks at least the ninth fatality linked to encounters with federal immigration agents since the Trump administration intensified its immigration crackdown. It also comes on the heels of another shooting death in Houston just a week prior. The increase in reported incidents has drawn renewed scrutiny on the administration’s mass deportation strategies, particularly following a surge in arrests during a five-day operation at the end of June, where ICE apprehended over 10,000 individuals.
ICE’s presence in Maine grew significantly in January when the Department of Homeland Security launched an enforcement initiative dubbed “Catch of the Day,” indicating ties to the state’s seafood sector. Although an enhanced operation concluded by the end of January, which resulted in numerous arrests—including individuals convicted of serious offenses—the agency faced criticism for the broader implications of its efforts. Recent enforcement strategies continue to raise questions about the treatment of immigrants and the administration’s approach to immigration enforcement, particularly in light of the distressing incidents that have resulted in fatalities.
