Nigerian Defense Minister Embarks on Technology Transfer Mission to China
Nigerian Minister of Defence, Christopher Gwabin Musa, is currently in Beijing for a working visit aimed at securing technology transfers to bolster the manufacturing capabilities of the Defense Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON). This initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance defense and security collaboration between Nigeria and China.
According to a statement from Lia Katun-Babatunde, the minister’s Special Assistant on Media, this visit seeks to strengthen bilateral defense relations, speed up the modernization of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), and significantly enhance the country’s indigenous military production capacity.
Leading the Nigerian delegation through various diplomatic engagements and industrial activities in Beijing, Minister Musa emphasized the nation’s commitment to integrating emerging technologies and artificial intelligence into its national security framework. This initiative aims to better equip the military to confront evolving asymmetric threats.
During a session at the China Electronics Technology Corporation (CETC) Innovation Center, the minister articulated the focus of Nigeria’s defense strategy. He emphasized partnerships that would transition Nigeria from being merely a consumer of defense technology to an active producer. Through DICON, the plan is to expand local production lines, promote comprehensive technology transfers, and achieve sustainable self-reliance in defense manufacturing to ensure national security.
In pursuit of self-reliance within Nigeria’s defense sector, the delegation also visited the headquarters and exhibition center of the China Northern Industrial Corporation (NORINCO Group). They explored a range of exhibits showcasing advanced land platforms, artillery systems, specialized ammunition, and integrated defense solutions.
Minister Musa conducted private bilateral talks with NORINCO’s president and other senior executives. These discussions centered on effective technology transfers, developing technical capacity, and establishing a joint production line in Nigeria in collaboration with DICON.
In a related development, Prime Minister Musa praised the efforts of Nigeria’s security forces for a successful rescue operation that resulted in the safe release of abducted students and teachers from three academic institutions in Oyo State on July 10, 2026. He applauded the coordinated actions of the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and other agencies involved, deeming the operation a model of intelligence-led security intervention.
The minister noted that the operation showcased professionalism, courage, and interagency cooperation. He highlighted the dedication of those involved, particularly in rescuing students and staff from Baptist Nursery and Primary School and other local institutions, despite the challenging conditions faced by security personnel.
While celebrating the safe return of the victims, Prime Minister Musa extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during the operation, acknowledging their sacrifices as embodiments of the highest values of the Nigerian Armed Forces. He expressed his heartfelt sorrow and offered prayers for the families affected during this difficult time.
