ACLU of Florida Criticizes ICE Following Fatal Accident
The ACLU of Florida has condemned Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after a tragic incident in which a 28-year-old St. Augustine man lost his life while attempting to evade federal agents. This incident marks the third death in a week linked to encounters with ICE.
Details of the Incident
Authorities report that four men fled a vehicle parked outside a St. Augustine gas station around 7 a.m. when confronted by ICE and Homeland Security Investigations agents. During the chase, one individual ran across a busy road and was struck by a Florida Highway Patrol sergeant’s vehicle. Dylan Bryan issued a statement via email to The Associated Press, confirming that the truck driver attempted to assist the injured man.
Investigation Underway
The specific circumstances that led to Tuesday’s confrontation remain unclear. The Department of Homeland Security acknowledged the incident and stated that both the Florida Highway Patrol and the DHS Bureau of Investigation are looking into the death of this Mexican national.
A Dangerous Trend
This fatal incident follows two previous deaths involving ICE earlier this month. On July 7, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was shot and killed in Texas, while 26-year-old Johan Sebastian Duran Guerrero was shot in Maine just days prior. In both cases, ICE later clarified that the individuals were not the intended targets of enforcement actions.
ACLU Addresses Policy Failures
Keisha Malfort, deputy executive director and strategy director for the ACLU of Florida, voiced serious concerns regarding federal immigration policies. “We are no longer discussing immigration—people are dying out of fear of everyday activities,” she said. The ACLU attributes these deaths directly to the aggressive practices enforced by ICE to meet unrealistic arrest quotas established during the Trump administration.
Call for Legislative Action
The ACLU of Florida criticized the federal government’s approach to immigration enforcement, claiming that ICE has become a “rogue agency” that operates without oversight or regard for human life. The organization is urging Congress to take immediate action to eliminate the quota system that they believe is endangering lives.
Continuing the Fight for Reform
While the investigation into the St. Augustine incident is ongoing, the ACLU insists that fundamental systemic issues in ICE operations must be addressed. “We may not have all the facts yet, but we know enough. Government agencies are prioritizing arrest quotas over constitutional rights,” Malfort stated. “Action must be taken to ensure there will be no more victims.”
The ACLU is calling on Congress to intervene and abolish these controversial arrest quotas to prevent further tragedies linked to ICE’s aggressive enforcement tactics.
