Robert Lewandowski, the latest addition to the Chicago Fire, has expressed that after four impactful years with Barcelona, he couldn’t envision playing for any other European club. This commitment to his past club plays a significant role in his decision to transition to Major League Soccer (MLS).
During a press conference in Chicago on Tuesday, Lewandowski was officially introduced, marking the end of his successful tenure at Barcelona. His time there included securing three La Liga titles, three Supercopa trophies, and one Copa del Rey victory.
“I couldn’t imagine myself at another club other than Barcelona, so I know the next step will be outside Europe,” Lewandowski shared. He acknowledged that while relocating from Europe to America poses challenges, he and his family are eager about this new chapter. “It’s a significant life change for us, but we view it as an exciting experience. I hope that for my family, this chapter of our lives will be beautiful.”
Insights from Former Teammates
The former Poland international sought advice from ex-teammate Bastian Schweinsteiger, who played three seasons with the Fire, and Thomas Müller, now with the Vancouver Whitecaps, regarding both the MLS and Chicago itself. He received glowing reviews about the city and the club.
“I started asking them not just about MLS, but also about the city and the club, and they praised it highly,” Lewandowski noted. “They emphasized how great it is for both professional training and family life.”
Ambitions with the Chicago Fire
Joining a Fire team that has made noticeable improvements under the direction of head coach Gregg Berhalter, Lewandowski is optimistic about the team’s potential. Currently, Chicago sits in third place in the Eastern Conference, just seven points behind first-place Nashville SC. Lewandowski believes he can contribute significantly to the team’s success.
“I see the potential to win a title with my new club,” he stated. “This is a new step in my career and life. I’m excited to work alongside my former staff and teammates. I hope to not only win games but also pursue the ultimate goal of clinching the title. We are in a good position, but hard work is essential.”
Impact on Team Culture
Coach Berhalter is confident that Lewandowski’s arrival will enhance not only the team’s performance but also its overall culture. “This is a huge deal for our football club, and we are excited to welcome Robert,” Berhalter said. “He’s not just an exceptional player; he brings a level of character that we value. His humility and dedication will positively influence our squad.”
With Hugo Kuipers already making a mark as a leading striker, scoring 13 goals in 11 games, Berhalter believes that the combination of Kuipers and Lewandowski has the potential to be formidable. He has begun implementing a two-striker system in training, anticipating success from this pairing.
Adapting to a New Environment
Lewandowski acknowledges the adjustments that come with moving, particularly at this stage in his life. “At my age, it’s somewhat easier to switch clubs, as I understand that changes are part of the journey, both on and off the pitch,” he explained. He recognizes that embracing new experiences takes time, and while football remains his primary focus, adapting to his new surroundings will help him perform at his best.
“If you are ready for the changes in life and willing to step outside your comfort zone, it makes it easier to enjoy the game,” he concluded.
