Las Vegas Family Faces Dire Immigration and Health Challenges
As attorney Margaret Stock prepares to advocate for Sheila and George Iffy, she recognizes the significance of her role extends beyond legal representation. She is, in fact, fighting for lives.
For children, this predicament is profoundly serious, Stock emphasizes. “If parents are detained, who will care for their child? There is no one else to step in,” she stated.
The child at the center of this situation is nine-year-old Judah, who was born prematurely in the United States during Sheila Ifi’s visit to Las Vegas. Since his birth, Judah has faced numerous health challenges, including seizures and cerebral palsy, which necessitate constant care. Although Sheila had overstayed her visa, she was initially granted the right to stay in the U.S. to care for her son, with George Iffy later joining them.
Now, however, the family faces the threat of deportation and a heartbreaking decision: leave Judah in a care facility while they return to Nigeria, or remain in the country unlawfully.

Las Vegas Immigrant Family Confronts Heart-wrenching Decision
Attorney Stock plans to request clemency, citing the family’s unique circumstances and history. “Human lives are at stake here. The reason they allowed her to stay was to work and care for the children—and to ensure her husband would not become a burden on taxpayers,” Stock explained. “The goal is to keep this family together to provide the best possible life for their child.”
Yet, following President Trump’s reelection in 2024, a significant shift in immigration policy occurred; strict border controls were enacted, and the temporary amnesty program was halted. As a result, Sheila lost her work permit and received notice to appear at an immigration hearing.
“This situation could result in extreme consequences for the family, entirely stemming from political decisions and the failures of our immigration system, which lacks compassion,” Stock noted, expressing frustration at a system perceived as punitive rather than humane.

A public hearing is scheduled for August, which Stock regards as a preliminary step. However, she remains apprehensive about the possibility of Sheila and George Iffy being arrested and detained.
MP Stephen Horsford, representing the area, is currently looking into the matter. Stock mentioned that a private bill could be proposed to allow the Iffy family to remain in the U.S., but it would need approval from both the House and Senate, as well as the President’s signature.
