Eckersley Shines in Wigan’s Victory Over Huddersfield
Zac Eckersley delivered an outstanding performance, scoring a hat-trick to lead Wigan to a hard-fought 24-10 victory against bottom-of-the-table Huddersfield in the Betfred Super League. The Giants, desperate to end an 11-game losing streak, initially took the lead with a quick try from Tyne Milne, putting them ahead 4-0 against the second-place Warriors.
This promising start for Huddersfield didn’t last long; just seven minutes later, Wigan struck back with their first try. Adam Kieran linked up with Oliver Partington, whose nimble footwork allowed him to cross the line, evening the score.
In the 30th minute, Wigan capitalized on their momentum when Kieran and Harry Smith combined effectively, allowing Eckersley to score his first try of the night.
Shortly thereafter, Wigan capitalized on a high tackle challenge against George Marsden, allowing Keiglan to convert a penalty and regain the lead. With time running out, Eckersley sealed the match for Wigan with two additional tries in the final minutes, completing his hat-trick and ensuring a solid victory for the Warriors.
Jack Campbell Makes Impact in Saint’s Win
In another thrilling encounter, young talent Jack Campbell made headlines by scoring two tries on his debut as St Helens triumphed over Catalans Dragons 34-18 in the Betfred Super League. The Saints, having faced a setback in their previous game against Toulouse, showcased their future potential at the BrewDog Stadium by pushing Catalans to a fourth consecutive defeat.
Catalans started strong, taking the lead in the 8th minute through Guillermo Aispuro-Biche, who scored following a swift move initiated by Charlie Staines. St Helens responded ten minutes later with a spectacular one-handed kick from Jed Cartwright, equalizing against a team coached by his father, John Cartwright.
After the Catalans briefly regained the lead, Nick Cotric finished off a well-executed play just after the half-hour mark. However, two tries just before halftime were ruled out, allowing the Saints to regroup. They capitalized on the missed opportunities with three rapid tries shortly after the break, taking control of the game.
Campbell’s first try was set up by a clever pass from Tristan Sailor, and shortly after, Tom Humphries set up Harry Robertson for another score. As the Catalans managed a quick response with Cotric’s corner try, Campbell answered by scoring his second try, extending St Helens’ lead. Robertson later secured the win with a final goal in the closing minutes of the match.
