The unfortunate incident, which occurred during a violent thunderstorm on Monday afternoon, resulted in the death of one individual, while numerous residents narrowly escaped peril. Preliminary reports indicate that the building experienced a catastrophic structural failure, with the lower levels subsiding into the ground, leaving only a fragment of the upper slab visible amidst the debris.
Witness Accounts and Emergency Response
Witnesses noted that the collapse took place around 3 p.m., shortly after a heavy downpour accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Two women and their children evacuated the premises as they detected structural issues, while a nearby young man sustained minor injuries trying to escape before the building fell.
Coordinated Search and Rescue Operations
Emergency responders from several agencies, including the Ogun State Safety Authority, State Fire Service, Ministry of Environment, Planning and Urban Development, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Nigeria Police Force, and the IFO Local Government Water and Environmental Sanitation Department, promptly arrived at the scene to conduct a coordinated search and rescue operation.
