Oyo Governor Advocates for Worker Welfare Amid Challenges
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has emphasized that his administration’s policies are designed to enhance the welfare of the state’s workforce. Speaking at the May Day 2026 celebrations held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex in Ibadan, he underscored the importance of creating a conducive environment for all workers.
Focus on Insecurity and Poverty
Represented by Professor Mbau Babatunde, the Secretary to the State Government, Makinde addressed the theme of this year’s May Day: “Insecurity and Poverty: Threats to a Conducive Work Environment.” He noted that this timely theme highlights the pressing challenges faced by workers today.
Impact of Insecurity and Poverty on Productivity
The governor pointed out that insecurity and poverty are dual obstacles that hinder productivity and undermine morale among civil servants. He stated, “Insecurity disrupts livelihoods, delays projects, and discourages investment, while poverty robs the dignity of work.” Makinde further elaborated on how poverty leads to despair, opens avenues for corruption, and diminishes commitment to public service.
Decisive Actions Against Challenges
Recognizing the implications of insecurity and poverty, Makinde claimed his administration has taken proactive steps to break the cycle. He highlighted the establishment of the Amotekun Security Network, a community-based initiative designed to complement existing security frameworks. Additionally, he mentioned ongoing logistical support provided to security agencies, including vehicles and communication equipment.
Enhancing Security Collaboration
Makinde noted that improved coordination among the police, Amotekun, the Armed Forces, and other institutions has been essential for effective information sharing and rapid responses to security threats. He firmly believes that a safe Oyo State directly correlates with a productive workforce.
Commitment to Worker Conditions
The governor also detailed his administration’s commitment to timely payment of salaries, pensions, and adherence to the national minimum wage. Other initiatives, such as addressing inherited promotion arrears and introducing a N10,000 monthly transportation allowance, were highlighted as vital support for workers facing economic hardships.
Calls for Continued Efforts and Collaboration
During the celebrations, Bosun Olabiyi Agoro and Martins Kayode, leaders of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) respectively, urged the government to intensify its efforts to combat insecurity and poverty. Olabiyi Agoro expressed concern over rising fuel prices and rampant inflation, indicating that these factors exacerbate workers’ struggles. Meanwhile, Kayode commended the state government for its responsive measures, advocating for the permanent establishment of the transportation allowance to further ease the financial burdens on workers.
The event was marked by various activities, including a march organized by TUC and NLC affiliates, reflecting solidarity among workers and their collective aspirations for a supportive work environment.
