Afenifere Condemns Recent Attacks on Oyo State Schools
The pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, expressed deep regret over the recent systematic attacks targeting three schools in the Oriile Local Government Area of Oyo State. This condemnation comes in light of a statement issued last Friday by the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi.
Details of the Attacks on Educational Institutions
According to Ajayi, the horrifying incidents involved assailants on motorcycles who struck at a Baptist nursery and primary school in Yawota, as well as Community Grammar School in Ahoro Ecinere, on May 15. The attacks have raised alarms about the escalating violence against educational institutions in the region.
Leaders Voice Concern Amid Celebratory Milestones
Afenifere’s leader, Pa Reuben Fasorant, expressed his sorrow over the unfortunate events, particularly poignant as they occurred during the week he celebrated his 100th birthday. His sentiment resonates with a broader concern for the safety of communities across the region.
Call for Immediate Action Against Rising Violence
Ajayi underscored the urgent need for decisive action to combat the growing wave of terrorist activities. He referenced a particularly alarming incident on May 12, when the Ogun State Police confirmed the abduction of a family of three by armed suspects in Ipojo Golden Estate, located in Ijebu-Ode.
Recent Security Breaches Highlighting Escalating Threats
Further reinforcing his point, Ajayi noted a successful intervention by police and local vigilantes that prevented a N10 million ransom recovery operation near Otefon Village Forest in Oyo State. He also pointed to a series of alarming attacks, including a church invasion in Ekiti State on April 18, where a pastor was killed, and several congregants were abducted.
Growing Concerns Over Security Measures
Mr. Ajayi recalled additional violent incidents occurring in February and May, where armed assailants attacked various communities, resulting in numerous fatalities and abductions. He emphasized that these recurring attacks raise serious concerns about whether current security measures are effective. He questioned the status of various resolutions and security initiatives previously announced by the state governors, highlighting a lack of tangible results.
The Urgent Need for Proactive Government Action
Ajayi insisted that the primary responsibility of government is the safety and welfare of its constituents. He urged the southwestern states of Nigeria to demonstrate a commitment to fulfilling their constitutional duties, stating that every necessary effort should be made to protect the region from kidnappers and bandits.
A Collective Responsibility to Secure Yorubaland
Finally, Ajayi reflected on the actions of the South West governors, expressing skepticism regarding their recognition of the significant security responsibilities they hold. He concluded by emphasizing that all measures must be taken to ensure there are no safe havens for terrorists anywhere from Lagos to Kogi, including Edo and Delta states, within Yorubaland.
