U.S. Africa Command Confirms Major Counterterrorism Operation in Nigeria
U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) has published footage detailing a significant counterterrorism operation in northeastern Nigeria, which led to the death of Abbilal al-Minuki, identified as a prominent leader within the global Islamic State (ISIS). The military operation was conducted in collaboration with the Nigerian government, under the supervision of U.S. President Joe Biden and the Secretary of the Army.
On Saturday, AFRICOM announced that the mission specifically targeted a robust concentration of ISIS fighters in the region, resulting in multiple fatalities among senior operatives. Preliminary assessments revealed that al-Minuki, alleged to be the chief of global operations for ISIS, was among those killed, alongside other high-ranking commanders.
According to AFRICOM, no American service members incurred injuries during the operation, further underscoring the effectiveness of the coordinated efforts. The release of this footage represents one of the clearest confirmations of the extensive coordination and substantial scale of the joint military mission undertaken by U.S. and Nigerian forces, which officials claim is the result of months of detailed intelligence sharing and operational planning.
AFRICOM Commander Dagvin Anderson described the operation as a significant achievement in the ongoing fight against terrorism in the Lake Chad region. He emphasized the mission’s importance, stating that it showcased the deepening security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, made possible by recent collaborative efforts between their military forces.
“This operation highlights the extraordinary value of the U.S.-Nigerian partnership,” Anderson remarked, underlining the collective commitment of both nations to combat extremist networks in the region. He added that both countries would persist in their relentless pursuit of terrorist threats, ensuring the safety of their citizens and interests.
Abbilal al-Minuki was characterized by AFRICOM as a pivotal figure within ISIS’s international command structure, allegedly responsible for coordinating global operations. His involvement extended to strategic direction concerning propaganda, financial coordination, weapon development, and explosives production.
Details regarding the precise location of the operation remain undisclosed, although it is believed to have occurred in the conflict-ridden northeastern region of Nigeria, where the Nigerian military has intensified its offensive against terrorist factions around the Lake Chad basin. This operation stands as one of the most significant setbacks for ISIS-linked networks in West Africa in recent years, illuminating the enhancing military collaboration between Abuja and Washington in their shared mission against terrorism.
Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu praised the joint mission as a “bold operation” that promises to deliver substantial losses to ISIS forces and disrupt their command structure in the region.
