Passenger Concerns Rise After Bird Strike Disrupts Air Peace Flight
Passengers aboard Air Peace Limited’s flight from London Gatwick to Lagos have voiced their frustrations regarding delays and insufficient welfare benefits following a bird strike incident at Gatwick Airport. The airline confirmed that the incident on Friday necessitated the cancellation of the flight as the aircraft was grounded for mandatory safety inspections.
Earlier in the day, Air Peace announced that its Gatwick-Lagos route had been impacted by the bird strike, describing the occurrence as an unexpected disruption. The airline stated, “We would like to inform our esteemed passengers that a bird strike occurred on the London (Gatwick)-Lagos route today,” emphasizing the need for thorough inspections of the affected aircraft.
The situation gained further attention after Nollywood actress Funke Akindele shared a video on social media, expressing her dissatisfaction with the lengthy delays and inadequate care provided for passengers. As one of the travelers, she highlighted the plight of elderly passengers who had been stranded since 6:30 a.m. without sufficient communication from the airline.
In her post, Akindele lamented that many travelers were left “hungry, exhausted, and without luggage” for hours, despite being promised hotel accommodations. Her video sparked widespread conversation online, with other affected passengers echoing her sentiments about delays in baggage retrieval and the lack of timely updates from the airline.
Air Peace Addresses Miscommunication
In response to the growing outcry, Air Peace released a statement asserting that the situation had been misrepresented and encouraged affected passengers to stay informed while making arrangements for their comfort. The airline explained that the bird strike qualified as a force majeure event, necessitating immediate grounding of the aircraft for safety assessments.
Air Peace noted that hotel accommodations had been secured at nearby facilities, but acknowledged additional difficulties, including congestion and delays in ground handling services, which affected baggage retrieval and transfers to the hotels. The airline emphasized that baggage handling is managed by external ground service providers, stating, “Air Peace does not have direct control over these processes.”
Despite the chaos, the airline maintained that no passengers had been abandoned and asserted that communication channels were kept open throughout the disruption. Nevertheless, the incident raises ongoing safety concerns.
