A Spectacular Draw Sends Austria and Algeria to World Cup Finals
In an exhilarating match on Saturday night, Austria and Algeria finished their final World Cup group stage contest in a 3-3 draw, allowing both teams to advance to the finals while resulting in Iran’s elimination from the tournament.
As the game approached its climax tied at 2-2, Algeria appeared to be content to let the clock run down. However, captain Riyad Mahrez netted his second goal with just under a minute left in stoppage time, pushing Austria to the brink of exit. Yet, in a dramatic twist, Sasa Kalajdzic headed in the equalizer shortly afterward, preserving Austria’s World Cup ambitions.
Austria’s scoring efforts also included contributions from Marko Arnautovic and Marcel Sabitzer, allowing the team to secure second place in Group J behind Argentina. This marks their first advancement to the knockout stage since 1982, where they will face European champions Spain on Thursday in the Los Angeles area.
On the other side, Algeria, now the ninth of ten African teams to progress, registered Rafik Bergari on the score sheet. Despite finishing third in their group, they are set for a potentially favorable round of 32 matchup against Switzerland on Thursday night in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Had either Austria or Algeria secured a victory, Iran would have moved on as one of the best third-place teams. However, Kalajdzic’s last-minute goal dashed Team Melli’s hopes, marking a heartbreaking end to their World Cup journey.
This tournament has been particularly tumultuous for Iran, both on and off the pitch, amid ongoing negotiations with Washington regarding a peace deal to conclude the war that erupted earlier this year. Issues citing travel restrictions, visa denials for support staff, and abrupt departures from the U.S. complicated their World Cup experience, eliciting complaints from coach Amir Ghalenoei and the players.
U.S. officials clarified that all restrictions were communicated prior to the tournament. In March, Iran requested a transfer of group stage matches to Mexico, where diplomatic relations are in place. This request was granted shortly before their arrival, allowing the squad to relocate from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana.
Following their elimination, the Iranian team issued a statement expressing heartfelt gratitude to the people of Mexico, particularly the city of Tijuana, remarking how difficult it was to leave.
In Kansas City, the atmosphere at Arrowhead Stadium shifted throughout the tournament, initially showcasing the colors of Argentina, Ecuador, and the Netherlands. However, for the final group game, the stands vibrated with Austrian red and Algerian green, drawing a significant local crowd eager to experience the World Cup vibe.
The burgeoning support for Algeria was particularly noticeable given their proximity to a training base near Lawrence, Kansas. Local college town residents quickly became enthusiastic supporters. While many newer fans might be unfamiliar with Algeria’s past grievances, experienced followers have awaited a chance for redemption since the infamous “Shame of Gijón” in 1982, when a controversial match eliminated Algeria despite a strong showing.
With both teams aware that a draw would secure their advancement, speculation arose about whether such an outcome might lead to a controversial finish. Nevertheless, the crowd of 69,045 was treated to an exciting match. Austria initially took the lead as Arnautovic executed a timely run past the Algerian defense before scoring his 49th international goal. Algeria responded with a powerful left-footed strike from Bergari just before the halftime whistle, intensifying the contest.
As the heat of the Kansas City night persisted, the teams traded goals again, with Sabitzer restoring hope for Austria, only for Mahrez to equalize shortly after. The latter stages of the match saw Algeria dominate possession, yet it was Mahrez and Kalajdzic’s late-game heroics that truly defined the match as it concluded in a breathtaking draw.
