Anambra State Government Invests in Tech Startups and Training Programs
The Anambra State government has allocated N80 million to support 80 start-up companies and 400 technology graduates, reinforcing its commitment to developing a robust digital economy and enhancing opportunities within the technology sector.
Initiative Supports Growth and Development
A statement released on Friday from Abuja highlighted initiatives by the Solutions Innovation District (SID), which was established by the state government to foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and digital skills development. The funding and graduation ceremony was held in Awka as part of the Anambra Start-up Investment and Technology Skills Graduation Program organized by SID.
Startup Funding Initiative Benefits New Entrepreneurs
The Startup Funding Initiative provided N1 million to each of the 80 companies that successfully completed SID’s 12-week incubation program, totaling N80 million in disbursements. The program was designed to equip participants with essential skills in business development, customer acquisition, financial planning, and investor readiness.
Governor Emphasizes Technological Innovation
At the event, Governor Chukwuma Soludo reaffirmed the government’s commitment to diversifying the state’s economy and creating job opportunities for the youth through technology and innovation. He underscored initiatives like the Anambra Startup Incubation Program and the 1 Million Anambra Digital Tribes Initiative, which aim to prepare residents for participation in the global digital economy.
Call to Action for Beneficiaries
Governor Soludo encouraged beneficiaries of the Start-up Fund and Technical Training Program to leverage their newfound knowledge and resources to build sustainable businesses that would generate jobs and attract further investment. He articulated a vision for transforming Anambra into Africa’s Silicon Valley, firmly grounded in strategic economic imperatives rather than political motives.
Impact of Solutions Innovation District
Chinwe Okoli, the Chief Executive Officer of the Solutions Innovation District and Special Adviser to the Governor on Innovation and Business Incubation, noted that the Start-up Funding Program is geared towards supporting innovation-driven businesses with significant growth potential. She mentioned that over 111 startups have benefitted from the district’s various incubation and acceleration programs.
Training Programs Expand Skill Sets in Technology
During the event, 300 participants graduated from a robotics training program organized in collaboration with Circum Technologies, gaining skills in embedded systems, automation, and sensor programming. Additionally, 100 participants completed an ISP Network Engineering Program partnered with Connekt Broadband, focused on broadband deployment and internet services.
Investment in Broadband Connectivity
Ifeanyi Adirika, CEO of Connekt Broadband, announced a N1 billion connectivity fund aimed at broadening internet access across Anambra’s 21 local government areas. This fund supports connectivity initiatives in schools, healthcare facilities, and public institutions, while also creating business opportunities for graduates of network engineering programs. Newly trained engineers will be involved in the company’s broadband expansion projects as implementation partners and service providers.
Addressing the Skills Gap in Nigeria’s Tech Sector
The stakeholders at the event recognized the alignment of training programs with ongoing efforts to mitigate the skills gap in Nigeria’s technology sector. By providing young professionals with valuable opportunities in telecommunications and digital infrastructure, the initiative aims to bolster the state’s digital economy and facilitate effective internet access, particularly in underserved areas.
