Building Collapse in Anambra State Nearly Claims Lives of Workers
More than 20 construction workers narrowly escaped death when a two-storey building under construction collapsed in Umuoji, located in the Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State. The incident sparked panic among residents and passersby in the vicinity.
Reports indicate that the building began to falter after loud cracks were heard emanating from the walls late Monday night, putting the workers’ lives at extreme risk. A visit to the site by our correspondent on Wednesday revealed that the structure, intended to function as a hotel, was leaning precariously following a partial collapse.
A local resident, identified as Uzor, reported that over 20 workers were on the second floor at the time of the incident. He recounted that the workers were busy with their tasks when, around 5 PM, they heard the alarming sounds of cracking from above. Fortunately, they managed to escape the building one by one before any were trapped inside.
Uzor noted, “This is an under-construction, three-story hotel building which has now caved in and is leaning dangerously on both sides. The rapid pace of construction, combined with heavy rainfall, may have played a role in this collapse.” He praised the workers for their quick reactions in avoiding tragedy.
Another resident, Amaka, attributed the collapse to rushed construction practices and the use of inferior materials. She expressed concern over the implications of building on damp ground during the rainy season: “How can you build effectively when the necessary materials aren’t dry? Most of the steel reinforcements used today are of substandard quality and inadequate for structures like this one.”
Authorities responded quickly, visiting the site on Tuesday and sealing off the premises to mitigate further risks. Despite these measures, the structure remains a hazard. Amaka urged for a thorough investigation to assess the reasons behind the collapse.
Our correspondent observed that the site had indeed been cordoned off with fencing and warning tape following the inspection by the state’s Urban and Regional Planning Department. An official at the scene, who preferred to remain anonymous, mentioned that an investigation is underway to determine if proper permits and building codes were adhered to during construction.
The official stated, “The site has been sealed off as a precaution while we investigate the reasons for the collapse, which poses significant safety concerns. Initial findings indicate extensive damage.” They emphasized that swift action would be taken to ascertain how the structure failed, whether regulatory guidelines were ignored, and if the necessary building approvals were obtained.
When contacted, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the occurrence but noted that details were still emerging. He stated, “While we acknowledge the incident, we are still piecing together the facts and will provide a comprehensive update soon.”
Structural failures like this remain a critical issue in various regions of Nigeria, often linked to subpar materials, insufficient regulatory compliance, and inadequate oversight of construction projects. In the wake of such incidents, authorities and industry professionals have repeatedly advocated for stricter building regulations to avert similar disasters in the future.
