APC Names Kassim Shettima as Bola Tinubu’s Running Mate for 2027 Elections
In a pivotal announcement ahead of the 2027 general elections, the All Progressives Congress (APC) confirmed Vice President Kassim Shettima as President Bola Tinubu’s running mate. This decision comes amidst previous speculations regarding a potential replacement, particularly the consideration of a Christian candidate from Northern Nigeria.
Despite efforts from some advisors to persuade President Tinubu to reconsider his choice, he has opted to maintain the Muslim-Muslim ticket, a strategy that sparked significant controversy prior to the 2015 elections. This choice reaffirms the party’s stance on religious representation as it moves into the upcoming electoral cycle.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has set a deadline of July 11, 2026, for political parties to submit their candidate lists on the designated portal. This timeline places urgency on the party’s efforts to solidify its platform and appeal to voters across the nation.
At a recent event in Abuja, where he received the completed INEC presidential candidate forms for both Tinubu and Shettima, APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yurwatoda articulated the significance of this milestone. He emphasized that today represents the fulfillment of a journey that began with the primaries, advancing through nominations for the House of Representatives, the National Assembly, and governorship roles.
Yurwatoda highlighted that the day reflects the overwhelming support of over 12 million APC members, who voted extensively for Tinubu as the party’s presidential candidate for the upcoming elections. He expressed confidence that not only party members but also the general citizenry, who have benefited from the President’s initiatives, will continue to support the administration.
“With 12 million votes already recorded, I am optimistic about the public’s transition from APC supporters to enthusiastic voters for the president,” he stated. The chairman lauded the president’s achievements in areas such as education and infrastructure, noting the extensive network of roads constructed throughout the country as part of his administration’s efforts.
During his address, Yurwatoda also called on APC governors and constituents to actively promote the President’s successes, urging them to share positive narratives about his governance. He underscored the need for the party to unite and campaign vigorously across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, suggesting heated competition among state leaders to galvanize voter support.
Assuring attendees of the party’s commitment to present the most capable candidates for the 2027 elections, Yurwatoda concluded, “We are confident in our strategy and will not waver in our pursuit of victory.” The event saw attendance from notable APC governors, including Senator Hope Uzodimma, alongside members of the National Working Committee, the APC Caucus in the National Assembly, and key party officials.
