Allied Peoples Movement Criticizes APC’s Opposition to Investigation Proposal
The Lagos State chapter of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has responded to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s call for an independent investigation into the recent abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriyele Local Government Area. The APM questioned the All Progressives Congress (APC) for opposing this proposal and highlighted the need for transparency in such sensitive matters.
Concerns Over APC’s Immediate Rejection
In a statement released on Tuesday by the party’s state public relations secretary, Ayodele Kazeem, the APM expressed alarm at what it described as the swift dismissal of the governor’s request for an independent inquiry. The party believes that if all stakeholders are genuinely committed to understanding the circumstances of the incident, there should be no resistance to a thorough and transparent investigation.
Questions Raised About APC’s Resistance
“We are deeply concerned by the rapid opposition of the APC, the Nigerian Senate, and Senator Adams Oshiomhole to Governor Makinde’s call for an independent investigation. This resistance raises a critical question: What are they afraid of?” the statement pointed out. The APM maintained that an independent inquiry would not only reveal the facts but also help identify the perpetrators and ensure justice for the affected families.
Clarifying Nigeria’s Sovereignty
The APM emphasized that Nigeria is a sovereign nation and a member of the United Nations. The party asserted that engaging with international organizations in matters of justice, accountability, and human rights does not compromise Nigeria’s sovereignty. This perspective seeks to reshape the narrative surrounding external involvement in internal security issues.
Inconsistencies in Political Responses
The APM criticized certain political actors for their inconsistent stances on security and governance issues. Notably, many who previously advocated for international intervention during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration are now opposing similar calls. The party’s statement made it clear that Nigerians seek consistency from their leaders rather than selective outrage based on political convenience.
Call for Unity in Addressing Security Flaws
Rather than focusing on criticizing calls for transparency, the APM urged opposition parties to unite in identifying those responsible for the criminal acts, exposing collaborators, and addressing the security lapses that enabled such incidents. The party appealed to the Federal Government, Parliament, and security agencies to support all lawful measures that can help unearth the truth behind the abductions.
Impact on Public Trust and National Security Reforms
The statement warned that attempts to block calls for an independent investigation could erode public trust in government institutions. Furthermore, the APM linked the kidnapping incident to broader concerns about national security and called for comprehensive reforms. These reforms should enhance intelligence gathering, foster cooperation among government agencies, and provide constitutional mechanisms that empower the state to better protect its citizens.
Advocating for Justice and Accountability
“The victims deserve justice. Their families deserve answers. Nigerians deserve the truth,” the party emphasized. The APM contended that Governor Makinde’s advocacy for an independent investigation presents an opportunity to restore public confidence in democratic institutions and bolster accountability on issues that significantly affect citizens’ lives.
