Nigerian Military Dismantles Indigenous People of Biafra Camp in Imo State
The Nigerian military has successfully dismantled the camp of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), located in Imo State. This operation led to the recovery of bodies believed to belong to two soldiers who were abducted and killed by the group in 2022.
Operation Targets IPOB/ESN Hideouts
Conducted on Thursday along the Uvaha-Orsu axis in the Orsu local government area, the operation was part of a strategic initiative to eliminate IPOB/ESN hideouts in the region. The military acted on intelligence regarding the presence of militants following up on previous attacks.
Troops Engage in Fierce Combat
According to a statement released by the military on Saturday, troops from the 82nd Division advanced towards a suspected IPOB/ESN hideout but came under heavy fire. The military reported that the forces demonstrated resilience, engaging the armed militants decisively, which allowed them to repel multiple ambushes during the encounter.
Recovery of Human Remains
After securing the area, troops conducted an extensive search that led to the discovery of a shallow grave. Upon excavation, the remains recovered are believed to be those of Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private First Class Gloria Mathews, who had been targeted by the group while en route to a wedding in May 2022.
Forensic Analysis Underway
The military emphasized the importance of identifying the remains and stated that they are undergoing detailed forensic analysis, including DNA testing, to confirm their identities. Efforts are also ongoing to reach out to the families of the deceased to facilitate proper identification and burial arrangements.
Commitment to Justice and Security
The operation underscores the Nigerian Army’s commitment to seeking justice for its fallen heroes and showcases the ongoing deterioration of the IPOB/ESN criminal network in the South East. The military denounced the barbarity of the group, highlighting their disregard for human life and the violence they inflict on innocent citizens and security personnel.
Continued Operations and Public Vigilance
In its statement, the military assured the public that operations will persist until all criminal elements are neutralized and lasting peace is restored in the region. Security agencies also urged law-abiding citizens to remain vigilant and provide timely, reliable information to aid in maintaining public safety.
