The Nigerian Army has reiterated its dedication to the protection of the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. During a recent interdenominational church service marking the 163rd anniversary of the Nigerian Armed Forces, Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Widi Shaibu emphasized the importance of prayers for military personnel and national leaders as they navigate the country’s evolving security landscape.
This reaffirmation was made in a service designed to honor the military’s legacy of patriotism, resilience, and sacrifice, while also renewing its commitment to serve the nation. Major General Maxwell Dangana, Commander of the Garrison at Army Command in Abuja, represented the COAS at this significant event.
Major General Dangana highlighted the anniversary as a moment for gratitude towards God for His continued favor, a chance to pay tribute to both fallen and active heroes, and a recognition of the courage and professionalism displayed by service members in various operational theaters. He stated, “This occasion is an opportunity to thank God for His mercy, reflect on our journey, celebrate our accomplishments, honor our heroes, and renew our commitment to defend our beloved country.”
For over 163 years, the Nigerian Army has stood as a testament to patriotism, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to national service. Throughout its distinguished history, the Army has consistently adapted to emerging security challenges while firmly upholding its constitutional mandate to protect Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Secretary of the Army emphasized that this anniversary serves as a poignant reminder of the military’s constitutional responsibilities, which are deeply intertwined with the security, prosperity, and confidence of the populace they serve to protect.
“As we gather today in worship, let us pray for our country, our leaders, and our military personnel. Let us seek God’s wisdom, protection, peace, unity, and prosperity for Nigeria. Furthermore, let us renew our commitment to our core values of loyalty, discipline, integrity, selfless service, and professionalism,” he urged.
Diving deeper into the themes of service and commitment, Brigadier General Anthony Maimagani, Head of the Nigerian Army Chaplain Services (Roman Catholic), encouraged troops to embody the compassion and dedication exemplified by Jesus Christ. He urged Army members to leverage their training and skills to safeguard national sovereignty and serve humanity effectively. He likened the soldiers’ calling to that of biblical prophets tasked with guiding their communities through challenges.
This year’s Nigerian Army Day celebrations carry the theme “Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: Forward of the Nigerian Army.” It serves as a powerful reminder of the Army’s pivotal role in ensuring national security and fostering peace among its citizens.
