Obasanjo Advocates for Healthy Living Amidst Personal Health Challenges
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo recently urged Nigerians to prioritize their health through balanced diets, regular exercise, and consistent medical check-ups. At 89, Obasanjo attributes his vitality to these lifestyle choices, despite managing diabetes for over four decades.
Event Highlights Obasanjo’s Commitment to Wellness
Speaking in Abeokuta during the ceremonial tee-off of the 2026 First Bank/OBJ Golf Tournament at the Abeokuta Golf Club, Obasanjo emphasized the importance of exercise, particularly as individuals age. He stressed that discipline in health management has been a cornerstone of his longevity.
Emphasizing the Importance of Exercise at All Ages
“Exercise is vital at any age, and becomes even more crucial in later years,” he articulated. Obasanjo proudly noted, “Though I officially turn 89, I remain healthy and robust, a testament to my commitment to health, especially given my 40-year battle with diabetes. Many people overlook the significance of their health.”
The DREAMS + C Principle for a Balanced Life
Obasanjo introduced his personal wellness framework, the “DREAMS + C” principle, which underpins his approach to healthy living. He detailed the components: “D” represents diet, prompting individuals to consider their food choices; “R” stands for rest, emphasizing the need for adequate downtime; “E” is for exercise, encouraging regular physical activity; “M” denotes medical care, advocating for routine health check-ups; “S” highlights social interactions, which he fosters through initiatives like the Seniors Club at OOPL, open to those aged 70 and above; and finally, “C” signifies contentment with one’s life circumstances while pursuing realistic ambitions.
Promoting Unity Through Sport
Obasanjo expressed enthusiasm for participating in the annual tournament, noting its broader impact beyond the sport. “This event fosters physical activity, camaraderie, and national unity,” he remarked.
Golf: An Accessible Sport for All
During the event, Oladele Adeniran, Vice Chairman of the Abeokuta Golf Club and Chairman of the tournament organizing committee, highlighted that the tournament honors Obasanjo’s significant contributions to Nigeria and Africa. Adeniran challenged the perception of golf as an elitist sport, arguing that it remains accessible to individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Pathways for Young Aspirants in Golf
Adeniran elaborated on how aspiring golfers can enter the sport, stating, “While playing golf may require financial investment, young individuals can start as caddies. This role grants them access to the course, allowing them to learn and hone their skills.” He added that many successful golfers worldwide have emerged from humble beginnings, using the sport as a pathway to societal respect.
The Health and Flexibility Benefits of Golf
Adeniran underscored the flexibility and health advantages golf offers, explaining how players can seamlessly integrate it into their daily routines. “Some rise at 6 a.m., complete nine holes by 8 a.m., and then prepare for work, while others play after their 5 p.m. shifts,” he noted. “A typical round of golf can contribute to over 10,000 steps in a day, making it both enjoyable and beneficial for staying active.”
Showcasing Top Talent in the Tournament
Adeniran announced that the tournament’s professional division featured Nigeria’s top golfers, including Francis Ekpeyong, the nation’s leading player and West Africa’s highest-ranked professional, who claimed victory in the professional event. Former Nigeria number one golfer, Sunday Olapade, finished in a tie for second place with veteran Nojim Shofela, showcasing the high level of talent present at the tournament.
