AGHAN Issues Final Notice to Airlines Over Unpaid Debts
The Airline Ground Handlers Association of Nigeria (AGHAN) has delivered a three-day ultimatum to airlines regarding unpaid debts, cautioning that services will be halted after May 6 if payments are not received. This announcement was made in a notice dated April 30, addressed to the Chairman of the Airlines of Nigeria (AON), indicating that numerous attempts to resolve the issue have gone unanswered.
Financial Strain on Ground Handlers
In a letter signed by AGHAN President Olaniyi Adigun and Vice-Chairman Ahmed Bashir, the association expressed the considerable financial pressure its members are facing due to these outstanding debts. “We refer to our letter dated April 20 and inform you that we have yet to receive any communication, commitment, or concrete action regarding the outstanding debt,” the letter stated.
The statement emphasized that the lack of response has exacerbated the financial and operational burdens on its members. “Our members have consistently and in good faith sought an amicable resolution to this matter, but to no avail,” it added.
Essential Role of Ground Handlers
Ground handlers serve a critical function at airports, providing vital support services to aircraft on the ground, which includes baggage handling, ramp services, and aircraft turnaround operations. The workforce plays an indispensable role in maintaining airport operations efficiently.
Ultimatum and Consequences
Confronted with the ongoing issue, AGHAN stated that it had no alternative but to issue a final notice, demanding resolution of all outstanding obligations. They warned that failure to comply will lead to a suspension of services. “We are compelled to issue a final notice within three days to resolve all outstanding obligations; otherwise, our members will withdraw services to all airlines in debt,” the announcement specified.
While the action was slated to commence on May 1, it was postponed to accommodate Labor Day celebrations. The new notification period is set to take place from Monday, May 4 to Wednesday, May 6. Following this, the planned measures will take effect if no resolution is reached.
Commitment to Dialogue
Despite the ultimatum, AGHAN has expressed a willingness to engage with stakeholders immediately in an effort to prevent disruptions to air travel. The association reiterated the importance of dialogue to address these challenges.
Broader Context of Financial Pressures
This warning comes amidst ongoing financial strains within the airline industry, which have recently been compounded by government efforts to alleviate some of the pressures. These measures include a 30% debt relief approval aimed at helping domestic airlines reduce operating costs associated with aviation fuel and other expenses.
