Former Government Official Critiques President Tinubu’s Transformation
Babachir Lawal, the former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), has asserted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu played a pivotal role in financing both former President Muhammadu Buhari’s and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s political campaigns. However, Lawal contends that Tinubu has undergone significant changes since assuming the presidency.
Recollections of a Longstanding Relationship
In a widely circulated video, Lawal revisited his longstanding rapport with Tinubu, painting him as a compassionate and generous figure ahead of the 2023 presidential election. He emphasized Tinubu’s critical contributions to Buhari’s rise to power, highlighting not only his financial support but also his strategic engagement of both domestic and international political consultants to enhance Buhari’s public image.
Financial Backing for Campaigns
According to Lawal, Tinubu was instrumental in funding key political initiatives, stating, “Tinubu funded Buhari’s campaign. He also supported Osinbajo’s vice presidential efforts. Additionally, he engaged consultants, including teams from Obama’s campaign, to bolster Buhari’s image.” This financial backing extended beyond conventional campaign expenses.
A Character Change Post-Election
While praising Tinubu’s previous dedication to assisting others, Lawal observed a marked shift in the president’s demeanor following his 2022 relocation to Abuja. He noted that Tinubu appeared to grow increasingly isolated from his former allies, becoming swayed by a new circle of advisors.
Introduction of Controversial Influences
Lawal further alleged that some members of Tinubu’s inner circle introduced him to individuals he described as “religious bigots,” which reportedly influenced his decision-making processes and overall perspective. This transformation began shortly after Tinubu pursued his presidential ambitions.
Recognition of Generosity Amidst Criticism
Despite his critiques of the current administration, Lawal acknowledged Tinubu’s generosity, pointing out that the president has provided financial assistance to numerous individuals with no immediate expectation of return. He noted that Tinubu possesses a keen aptitude for recognizing potential in others and is willing to invest in them without hesitation.
Disappointment with Current Leadership
Lawal expressed profound disappointment regarding the shifts in Tinubu’s character since he took office, claiming he no longer recognizes the leader he once knew. He lamented, “He was a good man back then, but now he has lost his soul. He has always been a responsible person, yet he appears to have strayed from that path.” Lawal’s feelings echo a broader sentiment of frustration regarding governance in Nigeria.
Lawal, once an ally of both Buhari and Tinubu, has grown increasingly critical of the current leadership and is positioning himself alongside opposition figures in anticipation of the 2027 general elections. His remarks come at a time of significant political realignment and heightened discussions about the government’s performance. As of this report, there has been no official response from the Office of the President regarding the allegations made in the viral video.
