Sanders Supports Platner Amid Controversy
WASHINGTON — Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has come to the defense of Graham Platner, the prospective Democratic nominee from Maine, following reports revealing that he had exchanged sexually explicit texts with a woman during the early years of his marriage.
In a statement, Sanders emphasized that working families are grappling with more significant challenges than issues pertaining to Platner’s marriage. “We are facing a housing crisis, soaring healthcare costs, and escalating grocery prices,” he noted during a press event at the Capitol. “It’s crucial to prioritize the pressing issues that affect working families, rather than focusing on Graham Platner’s marital situation.”
Sanders expressed well-wishes for Platner’s marriage but underscored the need for courageous leaders who will confront the oligarchic structures that influence American politics. He remarked, “It’s time to elect people who prioritize the crises affecting the working class.”
Platner’s wife, Amy Gartner, shared her frustrations regarding the media scrutiny in a recent campaign video. She expressed her anger over the text message revelations, describing it as “embarrassing” that individuals were discussing personal matters instead of focusing on the substantive issues her husband is addressing.
Reports from The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal revealed that Gartner initially informed Platner’s campaign about the explicit texts at the beginning of last year’s Senate race amid concerns over a potential opposition investigation. These outlets cited sources familiar with the campaign’s internal discussions.
In a statement, Platner acknowledged sending explicit messages to several women early in his marriage, which began in 2023. He expressed gratitude for the support he has received from his wife, stating, “Amy and I have overcome many obstacles together. We’ve focused on the crucial issues that affect the lives of Maine residents.” He emphasized that the campaign aims to address ideas that inspire real change, rather than being mired in sensationalism.
Senator Ruben Gallego, a Democrat from Arizona, also defended Platner, highlighting that voters are increasingly concerned about fundamental economic issues rather than past controversies. “What we need to focus on are the real challenges Americans face today,” he said, citing the high costs of living and housing as primary concerns for constituents.
Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) described the text message reports as a distraction from the real issues affecting voters in Maine. He characterized the narrative as a “tabloid story,” suggesting that the disconnect between Washington politics and everyday concerns in Maine is palpable.
As Platner prepares for a meeting with Senate Democrats, the support from figures like Sanders and Gallego remains pivotal in shaping his candidacy. Despite past controversies, recent polling indicates he continues to resonate with Democratic voters in Maine, which has led to some shifts in the local political landscape.
In light of this support, Maine Governor Janet Mills has recently stated that she has not withdrawn from the race but has rather ceased active campaigning while remaining committed to her voting responsibilities. Meanwhile, Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine) offered a cautious response, stating, “New revelations about Graham Platner continue to emerge, each reflecting aspects of his character.”
