The governor’s office announced that over 120,000 farmers would receive free agricultural inputs as part of this comprehensive initiative. The support includes essential items such as pesticides, knapsack sprayers, certified seeds, water pumps, bicycles, and post-harvest storage solutions.
Boosting Rural Mobility and Reducing Crop Losses
In a bid to facilitate greater mobility for rural farmers, Zulum initiated the distribution of 10,000 bicycles, coupled with the unveiling of post-harvest storage facilities. These efforts aim to diminish agricultural losses and improve crop preservation.
Gov. Zulum’s Commitment to Agricultural Progress
During a flag-raising ceremony at Kwaya Kusar Main Stadium, Governor Zulum articulated that this intervention is designed not only to bolster agriculture but also to promote food and nutritional security. The governor expressed a vision for creating employment opportunities and improving the socio-economic conditions of the populace.
Comprehensive Agricultural Support Program
The agricultural support program encompasses the entire value chain, incorporating mechanization, irrigation development, enhanced fertilizer and seed distribution, pesticide support, extension services, harvest aid, post-harvest storage, and agro-processing facilities. Special initiatives also focus on providing access to agricultural finance for women and youth.
Significant Increase in Fertilizer Distribution
Governor Zulum highlighted the procurement of 200 truckloads of high-quality NPK fertilizer, noting that this marks a significant increase from the prior season’s distribution of 75 truckloads. The fertilizer will be available at half the market price, ensuring that farmers have access to vital resources.
Cash Assistance for Vulnerable Communities
As part of his commitment to social welfare, Zulum revealed a cash assistance package of N500 million aimed at supporting vulnerable communities, particularly women and youths, in the five local government areas of Biu, Hauru, Kwaya Kusar, Shani, and Bayo. This initiative aims to enhance livelihoods and stimulate local economic activities.
Collaboration and Community Engagement at the Ceremony
The launch ceremony gathered various dignitaries, including former Deputy Governor Usman Mamman Durkwah and Borno State House of Assembly Chairman Abdulkarim Lawan. The presence of stakeholders, including traditional rulers and agricultural experts, underscored the community’s engagement in advancing Borno’s agricultural initiatives.
