Brighton Increases Bid for Tottenham’s Luka Vuskovic
Brighton & Hove Albion has elevated its offer to Tottenham Hotspur for center-back Luka Vuskovic, with the new proposal valued at £45 million, including performance-related add-ons. The Croatian international appears eager to make a move to the south coast.
Vuskovic spent the previous season on loan at Bundesliga club Hamburg and is currently representing Croatia at the World Cup, having recently participated in the team’s 4-2 defeat against England.
Recent Transfers Alter Vuskovic’s Standing
Earlier this week, Tottenham secured the signing of Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke in a deal worth £52 million. The Dutch defender has one year remaining on his contract with Brighton and was expected to feature for manager Roberto de Zerbi in the upcoming season.
Brighton initially acquired van Hecke for just £1.8 million in 2020 from NAC Breda, and they are believed to have negotiated a 20% sell-on clause. His arrival marks Tottenham’s third signing during the De Zerbi era, following the free transfers of Marco Senesi and Andy Robertson. With these additions, Vuskovic’s position within the squad may further diminish, especially with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven still at Spurs.
Vuskovic’s Development and Future Prospects
Michael Bridge from Sky Sports News noted that Vuskovic, having distinguished himself as one of Europe’s best young defenders during his loan spell at Hamburg, is keen on securing consistent first-team action. However, he is not interested in another loan move. The competition at Tottenham may limit his opportunities, placing him as a potential fifth-choice option behind established defenders Romero and van de Ven.
Uncertainty surrounds Romero’s future at the club, despite his recent contract renewal. It remains to be seen if any club will meet Tottenham’s asking price for his transfer. There is a belief within Spurs that Vuskovic possesses the potential to become one of the top defenders globally, but he may not yet be prepared to transition into a regular starter in the Premier League.
Some fans draw parallels between Vuskovic’s situation and that of Arsenal’s William Saliba, who benefited from multiple loan spells before breaking into the first team as one of the league’s standout defenders. Tottenham is expected to invest heavily this summer, leading to potential player sales, particularly for those who do not fit into De Zerbi’s plans.
Barcelona Interested in Van de Ven
FC Barcelona joins the list of clubs monitoring van de Ven’s situation at Tottenham. The Dutch international is in preliminary discussions regarding a contract extension with Spurs, but no agreement has been finalized. With two years left on his current deal, Tottenham holds an option to extend it by an additional year. De Zerbi has praised van de Ven, calling him the best left-sided central defender in the Premier League, indicating Spurs’ desire for him to remain long-term.
Brighton Set for Upcoming Season Opener
Brighton is poised to begin the 2026/27 Premier League season with a home match against Aston Villa on August 23rd, which will be aired live on Sky Sports. The match kicks off at 2 PM at the Amex Stadium, just three days after the first leg of the Conference League playoff. Brighton will then face Chelsea in a challenging away fixture on August 29th, though this date may shift due to scheduling conflicts with the European playoff second leg.
Tottenham’s Season Start at Brentford
Tottenham will kick off their 2026/27 Premier League campaign with an away match against Brentford on August 22nd, also to be broadcast live on Sky Sports. This marks the first full season for manager Roberto de Zerbi, following a narrow escape from relegation last year. After their London derby opener, Tottenham will return home to face Newcastle on August 29th and will confront Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on October 24th. The much-anticipated North London derby against Arsenal is set for December 5th at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the return fixture happening on May 1st, signaling the start of a grueling end to the season for Tottenham.
