Bruno Fernandes Challenges Roy Keane’s Claims on Assist Record
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has taken issue with Roy Keane’s recent comments regarding his pursuit of the Premier League assist record. After a commanding 3-0 victory against Brighton, Fernandes raised his assist tally to 21, achieving a new benchmark for the most assists in a single season.
In the previous week, the 31-year-old had equaled the record previously held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne during United’s 3-2 triumph at Nottingham Forest. This surge of assists has drawn both admiration and scrutiny from football analysts.
Keane, a legendary figure in United’s history, suggested that Fernandes’ focus on individual accomplishments may be overshadowing the team’s collective goals. He referred to the situation as a “circus act” and criticized Fernandes for prioritizing personal milestones. “When I was interviewed after the Forest game, the Manchester United captain mentioned that he should have taken a few shots but opted to pass instead,” Keane said during an interview.
However, the former Republic of Ireland international seems to have misinterpreted Fernandes’ statements. The captain clarified his remarks after the game, saying, “There were moments today when I probably should have passed instead of shooting. I’m very pleased with the assist, but my primary joy comes from our victory and ending the season on a high note.”
Fernandes accused Keane of misrepresenting his words, stating, “I don’t mind criticism, but what I can’t accept is when someone spreads falsehoods about what I’ve said. Roy Keane’s interpretation is not accurate; either he misheard my comments or he simply manufactured them.” He added that it’s all recorded, reinforcing his position.
The Manchester United captain expressed his respect for Keane’s legacy, acknowledging that while everyone is entitled to their opinions, inaccuracies in representation are intolerable. He expressed a desire to address the situation directly with Keane, revealing he had sought the former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s assistance in reaching out to Keane for clarification.
After providing an assist for Patrick Dorg’s opening goal at the Amex Stadium, Fernandes also contributed to Brian Mbeumo’s goal. Manchester United concluded the season in third place, securing qualification for the Champions League with three matches remaining.
Michael Carrick, who recently signed a two-year contract, has taken over as interim manager following Ruben Amorim’s departure. Carrick’s leadership has yielded an impressive 39 points from his last 17 matches. He remarked, “In this league, it’s challenging to consistently achieve results, but moving forward, we embrace a fresh start. The players will return from the World Cup ready to trust and support each other, a dynamic that can yield significant results.”
