Bruno Fernandes Reflects on Trophy Aspirations and Club’s Future
Bruno Fernandes has expressed his desire for more trophies during his tenure at Manchester United but remains optimistic about the club’s prospects under manager Michael Carrick. The midfielder, recognized as the Premier League Player of the Year in May, has secured both the FA Cup and League Cup since joining the club.
“Of course, I wanted to win more, but it wasn’t what I expected for myself or for the club,” Fernandes shared with ESPN. “I had a really good time, reaching a few finals, some of which I won, while others slipped away. My ultimate goal has always been to win the biggest competitions, and the Premier League is part of that dream, which I still aspire to achieve.”
Manchester United experienced a strong second half of the season, finishing third and qualifying for the Champions League for the first time since 2023-24. Fernandes highlighted the significance of this achievement, stating, “Being in the Champions League is the most important competition, allowing us to compete against the best teams in Europe.”
“I want to be at a level where I can play with the best players and prove I can compete at that level,” he added, emphasizing his aspirations within the sport.
A significant part of United’s resurgence can be credited to Carrick, who took over as interim head coach in January after the dismissal of Ruben Amorim. Under his leadership, the team won 12 of 16 matches, leading to Carrick signing a permanent contract in May.
Fernandes noted, “I think he brought a very positive energy to the team. He aimed to maintain positivity during a challenging coaching transition. Carrick introduced new ideas and different playing styles, which helped players rediscover their form. The results reflect this progress, and we hope to continue on this path.”
Team-mate Matheus Cunha also praised Carrick’s influence: “It was unbelievable. He genuinely inspires us, and we all aim for the same results he achieved. He embodies what Manchester United represents—winning at Old Trafford and experiencing the support of passionate fans.”
Reflecting on Carrick’s impact, Cunha added, “He often reminds us that Manchester requires a different adrenaline to succeed and encourages us to take risks. It’s vital for restoring the glory days of the club, and he communicates that message in a heartfelt manner that resonates with us, as we begin to build a strong foundation moving forward.”
