Central Bank of Nigeria Alerts Public to Surge in Fraudulent Activities
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has issued a warning regarding an alarming increase in fraudulent messages and cyber-attack attempts aimed at unsuspecting individuals. The bank has urged the public to exercise heightened vigilance in their digital interactions.
Increase in Misleading Communications
This advisory was released in a press statement late Tuesday by Hakama Sidiari, the Acting Director of Corporate Communications at the CBN. The bank has detected the spread of misleading communications falsely attributed to its name.
Aims of the Fraudulent Messages
The CBN stated, “Members of the public should be cautious of fraudulent messages, emails, and online communications claiming to originate from or be linked to the Central Bank of Nigeria, as these are intended to misinform.” Such deceptive messages are often crafted to manipulate victims into revealing personal information, typically by enticing them to click on harmful links or accept erroneous claims regarding the bank’s operations.
Cyber Threats Becoming More Sophisticated
The bank noted that these cyber threats are evolving, with perpetrators increasingly using digital platforms to disseminate misinformation and gain unauthorized access to sensitive financial information. The CBN emphasized that these tactics could lead to significant personal and financial risks for individuals.
Official Communication Channels
The central bank reiterated that its official website is the primary source for verified information and urged the public to rely on trustworthy sources for updates on its activities. “The official website of the Central Bank of Nigeria is www.cbn.gov.ng,” the statement affirmed, advising individuals to remain cautious when confronted with unsolicited messages or unfamiliar websites.
Recommendations for the Public
To mitigate the risk of falling victim to fraud, the CBN advised Nigerians to refrain from clicking on suspicious links and to avoid sharing personal or financial information on unverified online platforms. Such actions can expose users to identity theft and financial loss.
Collaboration to Combat Cybercrime
The central bank also encouraged the public to confirm the authenticity of any communications claiming to be from the bank by checking its official website or consulting reliable media sources. Moreover, the CBN has urged individuals to report any suspected fraudulent activities to relevant law enforcement agencies, highlighting the importance of collective vigilance in the fight against cybercrime.
Strengthening of Cybersecurity in Nigeria
The CBN reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the stability of Nigeria’s financial system while enhancing its cybersecurity infrastructure in collaboration with various institutions. This commitment comes in response to a growing trend of cybercrime within Nigeria’s financial sector, where fraudsters are increasingly exploiting digital channels to target both individuals and organizations.
Joint Efforts to Improve Consumer Protection
In a bid to further address these concerns, the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigerian Communications Commission recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at combating SIM-related fraud and enhancing consumer protection throughout Nigeria’s digital ecosystem. This agreement, established at the CBN headquarters in Abuja, seeks to improve coordination between the financial and telecommunications sectors, focusing on combating electronic fraud related to mobile phone numbers and protecting the integrity of payment systems.
