Training Initiative for Journalists in Katsina State
The Center for Democratic Development (CDD) has launched a training program for journalists in Katsina State, focusing on peacebuilding, ethical journalism, and conflict analysis. This initiative is part of a broader effort to foster social cohesion and bolster community resilience throughout Nigeria’s North West region.
Workshop Supported by Multiple Organizations
This two-day workshop, organized in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Mercy Corps, was funded by the European Union (EU). The program aimed to equip journalists with the vital skills necessary for responsible conflict reporting and for contributing to sustainable peace within their communities.
Thematic Focus on Journalistic Responsibility
Under the theme “From Conflict to Cohesion: The Role of Journalists in Community Peacebuilding,” the workshop was part of the Conflict Prevention, Crisis Response, and Resilience Project implemented by CDD, IOM, and Mercy Corps. The sessions highlighted the importance of ethical journalism and the dissemination of accurate information as key components for sustaining peace and stability.
Importance of Ethical Reporting Emphasized
During a session on conflict analysis, CDD Regional Program Manager John Dash-Resing stressed that responsible journalism is indispensable for maintaining societal peace. He urged journalists to adopt ethical and peace-oriented reporting practices to strengthen social cohesion, particularly in vulnerable communities across Katsina and neighboring states.
Media’s Role in Conflict Dynamics
Dash-Resing described the media as a “double-edged sword,” capable of either fostering peace or exacerbating tensions, depending on how information is reported. He noted that a lack of understanding of conflict’s underlying causes often leads to the proliferation of misinformation, which deepens societal divisions and heightens insecurity.
Call for Critical Conflict Analysis
Journalists were encouraged to critically examine conflicts, grasp their root causes, and communicate information in a manner that promotes understanding instead of escalating tensions. Dash-Resing highlighted the strategic role of journalists in fragile environments, emphasizing their unique position to either advance peace or provoke conflict, thus justifying their involvement as key stakeholders in social cohesion initiatives.
Advocating Institutional Cooperation for Effective Communication
IOM Bureau Chief Jean Naheshi Kutumbakana also addressed the importance of reliable information as the cornerstone of conflict prevention and peaceful coexistence. He advocated for enhanced cooperation among journalists and encouraged news organizations to collaborate more closely with the Katsina State Ministry of Information and Culture. Such partnerships could bolster the credibility and reach of peace messages and improve the coordination of media programming, ensuring that peacebuilding narratives receive adequate attention across various platforms.
