Celtic Overcomes Rangers in Thrilling 3-1 Victory at Celtic Park
Daizen Maeda delivered a remarkable performance as Celtic triumphed over Rangers 3-1 in a riveting Old Firm encounter at Celtic Park. This victory places Celtic just one point behind Premiership leaders Hearts, intensifying the title race.
After a disappointing draw with Motherwell earlier in the week, Celtic was keen to capitalize on the opportunity to close the gap at the top. However, their hopes were briefly dashed when Mikey Moore gave Rangers the lead just ten minutes into the match, taking advantage of a lapse in Celtic’s defense.
Despite the early setback, Celtic quickly regrouped. Yang Hyun-joong notched an equalizer shortly thereafter, and it was Maeda who distinguished himself in the second half with an audacious overhead kick that put his team ahead. The atmosphere at Parkhead surged as Celtic regained control of the match.
Celtic secured the championship crown with this win and will retain the title if they clinch victories in their remaining two matches—first against Motherwell on Wednesday and then versus the league leaders Hearts on the final day.
Right from the outset, the match unfolded at an exhilarating pace with both teams forging several scoring chances. Arne Engels initiated the action with a long-range attempt that was expertly parried away by Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland. At the opposite end, Moore set up Youssef Cermiti, whose near miss barely slipped past the far post.
Rangers initially capitalized on the momentum, taking the lead through Moore after an exhibit of resilience from Cermiti. However, Celtic soon struck back; Maeda nearly leveled the score after battling Emmanuel Fernandes, but his shot went wide. Nonetheless, the equalizing goal came shortly after, shifting the game’s dynamics.
Maeda’s Moment of Brilliance
A well-timed pass from Luke McCowan found Engels making an incisive run into the Rangers box, culminating in a clinical finish from Young. After a VAR review deemed no offside, Celtic’s hopes surged. In the second half, they ramped up pressure, with Maeda emerging as the standout player. Kieran Tierney’s delivery into the box allowed him to outmaneuver Fernandes and find the back of the net.
The defining moment came when Sebastian Tunekuti’s assist enabled Maeda to execute a stunning scissor kick from 15 yards out, sending the ball crashing into the top corner beyond the outstretched arms of Butland.
Even after falling behind, Rangers pushed forward in search of a response, with substitute Bojan Miowski rattling the crossbar in a tense finale. However, despite their persistent attacks, it was clear that Celtic was in firm control of the match.
In a disappointing turn, Rangers under manager Danny Rolle faced their third consecutive defeat, reminiscent of the struggles under previous manager Dick Advocaat in 2000. With the season winding down, they are left to contemplate a guaranteed third-place finish.
Meanwhile, Celtic will head into their next match against Motherwell buoyed by this crucial win, fully aware that their title ambitions are still very much within reach.
