Benvenuto Cellini Advances as Derby Favorite with Strong Performance
Benvenuto Cellini has solidified his status as a prime contender for the Derby after securing a commanding win in the Boodles Chester Vase. The striking chestnut, who previously triumphed twice last season and earned bronze in Doncaster’s Futurity Trophy alongside Aidan O’Brien’s One Two Three, was heavily favored at 2-9 for this race—a notable event that Ballydoyle has claimed for the 11th time since Epsom hero Lambourn’s victory last year.
Ridden by Ryan Moore, Benvenuto Cellini strategically relaxed in the midfield while his stablemate, Proposition, led the pack. As the field approached the home turn, he smoothly transitioned from the rear of the front runners, showcasing remarkable acceleration to pull ahead by four and a quarter lengths, leaving a strong impression on spectators.
Trainer Aidan O’Brien commented on the victory, emphasizing the colt’s impressive pedigree and readiness to return to the track after a year of development. “It’s great to get him a fresh start over a mile and a half,” he noted, highlighting his anticipation for the horse’s future races.
Reflecting on the race, Moore acknowledged the challenges faced. “The race was somewhat disjointed initially,” he explained. “However, when he picked up speed three furlongs out, you could see the potential. His performance bodes well for his upcoming appearances.” This marks a notable milestone for Moore, who is excited about his first win with Benvenuto Cellini, expressing confidence in the stallion’s capabilities.
Amelia Earhart Secures Victory at Cheshire Oaks
In another key race, Amelia Earhart triumphed over the highly-touted I’m the One, delivering Aidan O’Brien her 10th victory in the Weatherby’s Cheshire Oaks. I’m the One entered the race as a strong contender following an impressive debut win at Newbury last month, earning a spot as a favorite for the Epsom Oaks, a race previously won by the renowned Enable.
Despite her pedigree, I’m the One stumbled at the start and seemed uneasy on the track. In contrast, Amelia Earhart, adorned with a unique combination of hood and blinkers, maintained a steady pace under Moore’s guidance. Although I’m the One held the lead through the straight, the 13/8 shot Amelia Earhart surged forward to secure a two-length victory, illustrating her growing prowess on the track.
Moore expressed his appreciation for Amelia Earhart’s performance, stating, “We always believed she had potential. Being a Camelot offspring, her lineage is well-respected. The mile-and-a-half distance suited her perfectly, and she handled the track conditions seamlessly, delivering a confident performance that serves as an ideal trial for Epsom.”
Adonias Shines in Quest for Ascot Glory
Rebecca Menzies is optimistic about her talented horse Adonias as he showcased his speed in the CAA Stella Lily Agnes EBF Conditioning Stakes. The Soldier’s Call colt, purchased for £32,000 as a yearling, quickly made a name for himself with a decisive debut win at Musselburgh earlier this month.
In a display of impressive speed, Adonias (100/30) overcame a weight disadvantage, taking charge from the onset in the five-furlong race. Despite attempts from Hickory Lad and 7/5 favorite Weight Geordie to catch up, Adonias proved too formidable, crossing the finish line with just a quarter-length lead.
Menzies is now contemplating a bid for Royal Ascot, citing Adonias’s consistent overachievement in his short career. “As far as I’m concerned, he has exceeded expectations at every turn. His professionalism and quick start give us every reason to aim high,” she remarked. With ambitions set on the National Stakes and Ascot, both trainer and owners are eagerly looking forward to what lies ahead for their promising colt.
