Chief Justice Calls for Strengthened Judicial Integrity
The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekereekun, emphasized the critical role that judicial staff play in upholding public confidence in the judiciary. Speaking at the opening of the 2026 International Bar Association Judges Forum and Conference in Abuja, the CJN underscored the notion that public trust in the courts is nurtured not only through constitutional guarantees but also by the conduct of judges themselves.
Justice Kekereekun pointed out that the successful administration of justice demands more than the mere application of legal rules. She noted that the judiciary cannot operate in isolation; it is dependent on courageous institutions and principled individuals committed to upholding the rule of law, even when facing unpopular or politically charged situations.
“Justice requires wisdom, empathy, independence of thought, and moral courage—qualities that are inherently human,” she articulated, stressing that judicial independence entails a significant responsibility. According to Kekereekun, maintaining public trust goes beyond constitutional provisions; it is significantly influenced by judges’ actions and ethics.
For the CJN, integrity, competence, diligence, self-discipline, transparency, and ethical leadership form the foundational pillars underpinning the judiciary’s legitimacy. “All judicial officers must continually strive to justify the trust that society places in the courts,” she asserted.
Justice Kekereekun also addressed the responsibilities of lawyers, reminding them that they are not merely advocates for private interests, but pivotal figures in upholding the rule of law as officers of the court. The collaboration between judges and lawyers is essential for the effective administration of justice, she asserted, reinforcing the idea that professionalism, civility, and mutual respect are vital for a robust judicial process.
“The defense of justice is a collective responsibility that extends beyond judges to include lawyers, academics, policymakers, civil society, and all citizens who cherish freedom, equality, and human dignity under the rule of law,” the CJN emphasized. She noted that justice will persevere only if those responsible for its administration remain vigilant and dedicated to protecting it.
Commenting on the conference theme, “Defending Justice,” Justice Kekereekun highlighted its relevance, encouraging participants to contemplate not only the mechanisms of justice administration but also the profound responsibilities borne by judges and lawyers. Discussions on topics such as judicial independence, fair sentencing, legal advocacy, and the integration of artificial intelligence into the judiciary are expected to enrich delegates’ understanding while fostering practical solutions to enhance their respective judicial systems.
