Coco Gauff Faces Tough Defeat at French Open
Coco Gauff’s impressive run at the French Open came to an unexpected halt when she lost to Anastasia Potapova in the third round. The match, played on Saturday, ended with a score of 4-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4, effectively terminating Gauff’s title defense at Roland Garros.
Potapova expressed her admiration for Gauff, stating, “Coco is a real champion. I have a lot of respect for her.” Reflecting on her perseverance, she added, “I stayed there and kept fighting for that last point and I’m incredibly proud of myself to be here.”
Notably, the atmosphere in Court Philippe Chatrier was subdued, as many French fans chose to watch the Champions League football final instead. Despite this, Gauff’s determination was evident throughout the match.
Gauff made headlines last year when she captured her second Grand Slam title by overcoming top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in the final. This year’s early exit is a significant shift in her trajectory, especially after an impressive season leading to the Italian Open.
Potapova, now ranked 30th, boasts a career record of three wins against Gauff and two losses. Her strong performance on clay this season includes reaching the finals in Linz, Austria, and making it to the semi-finals at the Madrid Open.
During the match, a key moment came when Gauff’s forehand went wide on Potapova’s first match point. Potapova celebrated her victory by lying on her back and raising her legs in jubilation. Gauff, however, quickly acknowledged the crowd before departing the court.
While Gauff faced her share of challenges, including three double faults and 46 unforced errors, her performance was not solely characterized by mistakes; Potapova’s control during long rallies proved to be a decisive factor. In a display of stamina, Gauff ran a total of 2,309 meters compared to Potapova’s 2,090 meters.
Naomi Osaka Shines in 100th Grand Slam Match
In a notable performance earlier in the tournament, Naomi Osaka defeated 18-year-old Iva Jovic in her 100th Grand Slam match, winning 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-4. This victory secured her a spot in the round of 16, where she is set to face top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka, who advanced by beating Daria Kasatkina 6-0, 7-5.
Osaka’s fashion choices have also attracted attention, as she wore a metallic gold bomber jacket over a sequined gold dress. This outfit was complemented by a tawny-gold train from the Suzanne Lenglen coat, creating a stylish spectacle on the clay court.
During her entrance, Osaka wowed the crowd in a ceremonial black skirt and sleeveless beaded bodice before unveiling a dazzling golden dress, stating that it reminded her of the Eiffel Tower at night. “I’m surprised every time,” she admitted regarding her evolving style.
With a clear desire to shift away from the more traditional tennis attire, Osaka explained, “For me, it’s weirder to wear a normal tennis kit. Right now, I just want it to be fun, and I want it to be exciting for me.” Her elaborate costumes, meticulously planned a year and a half in advance, showcase her creative approach to the sport.
Conditions at the Tournament Begin to Moderate
The tournament faced challenging hot and humid conditions for the first week, with temperatures soaring to 34 degrees Celsius (93 degrees Fahrenheit). However, relief from the heat is anticipated as the tournament progresses into the second week.
Amid the sweltering conditions, a spectator required medical attention during Osaka’s match. Meanwhile, in other matches, Diane Parry triumphed over 2019 semi-finalist Amanda Anisimova, and Diana Schneider bested Ukraine’s Oleksandra Olnikova amidst political tensions surrounding social media activity.
On the men’s side, Alejandro Tabilo secured a victory against 17-year-old Frenchman Moise Kouame, and Matteo Berrettini survived a grueling five-hour match against Francisco Comesana. After winning on his fourth match point, Comesana’s shot inadvertently hit Berrettini in the chest, leading to an emotional moment.
The spotlight will now shift to Felix Auger-Aliassime, who faces American Brandon Nakashima. As the top-seeded player remaining in the draw, Auger-Aliassime’s performance will be critical moving forward, especially following Jannik Sinner’s surprising early exit.
In a safety update, tournament organizers have adjusted the placement of an advertising board in response to recent accidents, including one incident where Türkiye’s Zeynep Sonmez had to withdraw from a doubles match due to an injury sustained from tripping over it.
