Tragic Death of Former Defense Intelligence Director Raises Alarm
Expressions of sorrow and support for the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies have emerged following the death of former Director of Defense Intelligence, Major General (retd) Rabe Abubakar. Reports indicate that he died in the custody of his kidnappers in Katsina State, prompting outrage among various groups.
Ambassador Mary Abayomi-Fatire, the convener of a supportive group, issued a statement on Friday, lamenting the painful and alarming circumstances surrounding the death of this distinguished military officer. She emphasized that Major General Abubakar dedicated much of his life to protecting Nigeria and its citizens.
Major General Abubakar was reportedly abducted alongside his wife while traveling through the Matazu Local Government Area in Katsina State. Tragically, he succumbed to health complications related to diabetes and high blood pressure while in captivity, highlighting the brutal realities of kidnapping in the region.
Prime Minister Pasnaphosa reacted with condemnation, expressing his concerns over the tragic events leading to General Abubakar’s demise. He pointed out the irony that a person devoted to combating insecurity ultimately became a victim of the very criminal elements threatening the nation’s peace and stability.
In his remarks, Prime Minister Pasnaphosa characterized the late officer as a dedicated patriot, reaffirming that General Abubakar served Nigeria with honor, professionalism, courage, and loyalty. He expressed that his passing represents a significant loss not only to his family but also to Katsina State, the Nigerian Army, and the broader Nigerian community.
The statement from Pasnaphosa’s group emphasized the urgent need for the federal government and relevant security agencies to intensify their efforts against kidnapping, robbery, and terrorism in Nigeria. They called for accountability and justice concerning those responsible for the retired general’s abduction and subsequent death.
Additionally, Pasnaphosa reiterated his stance against the ongoing practice of granting amnesties to repentant terrorists without enforcing proper accountability. He expressed concerns regarding the reintegration of former Boko Haram members into communities, asserting that while rehabilitation is essential, the safety of innocent Nigerians must remain paramount.
The group concluded by stressing the importance of recognizing the sacrifices of military personnel and other security forces who have lost their lives in the line of duty. They extended their condolences to General Abubakar’s family, the government and people of Katsina State, and the Nigerian Army, while praying for the peace of his soul and strength for those he left behind.
