Prosecutors Unveil Evidence in Alleged Coup Plot Against Nigerian Government
Prosecutors launched their case on Wednesday, calling four witnesses in the early trial of six men charged with conspiring to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Military Investigation Reveals Arrests and Evidence
One witness, a soldier from the Nigerian Army Military Police (NACMP), provided detailed testimony regarding the investigation of the alleged coup plot. Identified only as “AAA,” the soldier explained how the conspiracy was uncovered. According to the witness, General OO Oluyede, the then Chief of Army Staff (COAS), initiated the investigation after receiving credible intelligence regarding Colonel MA Maji and a group planning to destabilize the government.
Details of the Alleged Conspiracy Emerge
The testimony led by Director of Public Prosecutions Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN) confirmed that the witness could identify all six defendants. The soldier stated that upon receiving a reliable intelligence report, the COAS ordered a thorough investigation, which ultimately resulted in the arrest of Colonel Maji and the seizure of critical evidence, including a mobile phone, documents, and planning materials.
Forensic Analysis Uncovers Extensive Planning
The soldier revealed that the seized mobile phone had undergone forensic analysis, which uncovered intricate plans delineating the relationships between Colonel Maji, other conspirators, and the accused. Evidence of financial transactions linking the defendants to Colonel Maji was also discovered. The soldier stated that the investigation revealed a code word known to the conspirators, suggesting an organized effort to execute the coup.
Corporate Financing of the Alleged Coup
According to the witness, a company named Purple Wave emerged as a potential source of funding for the coup plot. Financial records from Purple Wave, obtained from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), showed suspicious transactions that were allegedly used to finance the conspiracy. These records indicated large sums of money transferred within a specific timeframe, raising questions about their intended use.
Strategic Planning and Target Identification
The witness elaborated on meetings held in Abuja, where conspirators discussed the mechanics of the coup, identified key government officials for assassination, and plotted to occupy strategic locations during the operation. Such revelations included the conspirators’ agenda to implement new governance structures post-coup, as well as covert discussions characterized by anti-government sentiments.
Defense Challenges and Ongoing Proceedings
During cross-examination, Oyedepo submitted a letter from Brookville Hotel and related payment receipts to support the claim of meetings held between the alleged conspirators. Although defense lawyers objected to the admissibility of these documents, Judge Joyce Abdulmalik accepted them into evidence. Further, the prosecution called a compliance officer from Jaiz Bank, who provided account statements linked to the sixth defendant, Abdulkadir Sani.
Adjourned Hearings Await Next Witness and Evidence Submission
As the trial progresses, further hearings are scheduled for May 4 and 5, with a fourth prosecution witness set to continue testimony. The prosecution aims to reinforce its case against the defendants, delving deeper into the financial underpinnings and operational plans of the alleged coup.
