African Youth Poised to Shape the Digital Future
Africa’s digital landscape is rapidly evolving, and its future is now in the hands of the continent’s youth. As industries undergo technological transformations, acquiring digital skills has shifted from a basic educational requirement to a critical economic necessity.
Leading in digital solutions for Africa’s development, MTN asserts that enhancing access to digital skills fundamentally equates to expanding opportunities. This commitment is especially relevant as the continent strives to harness its youthful population for sustainable growth.
World Youth Skills Day, which takes place annually on July 15, serves as a valuable occasion to examine how digital inclusion, skills development, and strategic partnerships are amplifying the participation of African youth in the burgeoning digital economy.
For MTN, investing in digital skills goes beyond merely preparing young individuals for upcoming professions. It seeks to empower them to become entrepreneurs, innovators, and problem-solvers who will drive sustainable progress across the continent.
Nompilo Morafo, MTN Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer, emphasized that empowering Africa’s young demographics necessitates not just the provision of essential digital skills but also the creation of pathways toward meaningful employment and entrepreneurship. “Opportunity is the true destination,” she noted, highlighting the organization’s commitment to facilitating participation in the digital economy.
Unlocking Africa’s Competitive Edge
Africa’s most significant competitive asset resides in its youthful and burgeoning population. To realize this potential, there needs to be more than just enhanced connectivity and access to technology. Young individuals must gain future-ready skills and opportunities that enable them to compete on a global scale while fostering innovation within their communities.
The urgency of this mission is palpable. Sub-Saharan Africa is projected to add approximately 150 million people to its population over the next five years. According to the World Economic Forum’s 2025 Future of Jobs Report, nearly 40% of current skills are becoming outdated, and about 22% of jobs are expected to evolve significantly by 2030 due to technology’s continuing influence on various industries.
Preparing the youth for this future demands more than just digital literacy; it requires practical, industry-specific skills that facilitate meaningful employment and economic engagement. MTN is actively working to create these pathways through initiatives like the MTN Skills Academy, which connects learning with opportunity.
Transforming Ambitions into Actions
Across MTN’s various markets, this ambition manifests in different ways. Each community faces distinct challenges, yet the objective remains constant: to dismantle barriers that hinder youth from participating in Africa’s digital economy.
South Sudan’s Educational Access Breakthrough
In South Sudan, MTN has collaborated with the Ministry of General Education and Guidance, as well as the Ministry of ICT and Postal Services, to launch the zero-rated Junub Academy national e-learning platform. This initiative has garnered recognition for enhancing educational access, allowing both teachers and students to access approved educational content without incurring data costs—addressing a significant barrier to digital learning in underserved regions.
This initiative is particularly crucial given South Sudan’s longstanding infrastructural and educational hurdles, showcasing how digital connectivity can effectively bridge the educational divide.
Congo-Brazzaville’s AI Focus
In Congo-Brazzaville, MTN is tapping into the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) by investing in young innovators dedicated to solving Africa’s unique challenges. In collaboration with the Giovani & Mamie Foundation and BantuHub, MTN hosted GMU Tech Week 2026 in Pointe-Noire—a week-long program aimed at turning youth potential into future tech leadership. Over 200 participants learned from industry experts, explored promising career paths, and developed impactful community initiatives.
Diversity in Inclusion Efforts
In Côte d’Ivoire, MTN emphasizes that digital inclusion must be accessible to all. Partnering with the National Institute for the Advancement of the Visually Impaired (INIPA), MTN established a Braille multimedia room equipped with specialized computers and assistive technology. This facility empowers visually impaired students to access educational resources and strengthen their digital skills, ensuring that disabilities do not hinder opportunities.
In Benin, MTN is enhancing pathways between digital education and employability with its flagship TITA digital skills program. Launched in 2022 in collaboration with Digital Valley and local universities, this initiative equips participants with relevant skills in coding, digital entrepreneurship, and content creation. Already, over 1,000 young people have benefited, with many securing positions in local industries or beginning their professional journeys within MTN Benin.
While these diverse initiatives respond to specific community needs, they collectively advance the vision of empowering African youth to engage fully in the digital economy. From seamless access to education without connectivity constraints to helping visually impaired students achieve digital independence and fostering innovative thinkers, each program forges avenues for greater opportunity. The MTN Skills Academy continues to reach over 350,000 learners across 11 markets, supported by a growing network of training and developmental partnerships. MTN’s commitment to linking digital skills with real-world opportunities is critical for promoting the broader progress of Africa.
