Cross River State Democratic Congress Leaders Express No Confidence in Chairman
The Executive Council of the Cross River State chapter of the Democratic Congress of Nigeria has unanimously passed a motion of no confidence against state chairman Godi Akpama. This decision stems from allegations that Akpama has been receiving government salaries despite claiming to have resigned from his position months ago.
Party leaders argue that these salary payments pose a significant conflict of interest and detract from the party’s growth within the state. The resolution was communicated in a press release issued on Friday, which was signed by key figures including Sir Mark Ujoor, the deputy national chairman, Comrade Cletus Albert Amau, the national publicity secretary, and other senior party members.
The communiqué states that Akpama allegedly continued to receive government compensation until May 2026, despite his claims of resignation. This revelation has heightened concerns among party officials regarding his leadership and decision-making capabilities.
Allegations against Akpama extend beyond financial misconduct to include anti-party activities, abuse of power, and failure to consult with stakeholders regarding changes to the state executive committee. Critics point out that he has exerted pressure on party organizations and sidelined key leaders, undermining the coherence and unity of the party.
Additionally, the leaders accused Akpama of lacking transparency in managing party resources and funds. They expressed concern over the establishment of review committees without proper constitutional authority and the inclusion of individuals with questionable loyalty in the party structure. There have been calls for better coordination of local government activities and public engagement, which they feel has been neglected under his leadership.
Frustrated executives are urging the party’s national working committee to launch a thorough investigation into these allegations to verify if constitutional procedures were breached and if party funds were misappropriated. They seek intervention from national leadership to restore the original structure of the National Executive Committee and to re-establish unity and transparency within the party.
“The future of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Cross River State must not be jeopardized by internal disputes, personal interests, or unconstitutional practices,” the communiqué emphasized.
In response, Akpama has vehemently denied all allegations, describing them as a politically charged smear campaign aimed at undermining the opposition. He insists that he formally resigned from his government role on February 16, 2026, and claims to have evidence, including documents and receipts, to support his assertions of returning any salary mistakenly issued post-resignation.
Furthermore, Akpama contends that political disagreements regarding the party’s direction leading up to the gubernatorial election should not be misconstrued as disloyalty. He defends his position by noting that dissent is a crucial aspect of democracy, while denouncing practices like character assassination and misinformation as antithetical to democratic principles.
