Nationwide Protests Declare June 12 as Day of Action Against Government Failures
A coalition of civil society organizations, alongside various state institutions, has declared a nationwide protest on June 12. This assembly is a response to escalating security issues, widespread hunger, and ongoing hardships faced by the populace.
Coalition Voices Discontent During Democracy Day
Traditionally designated as Democracy Day, June 12 offers little cause for celebration for many Nigerians, according to the coalition’s statement, which was signed by prominent figures including Femi Falana, President of the Alliance to Survive the Coronavirus (ASCAB), and Hassan Taiwo Soweto from the #EndBadGovernanceMovement.
Growing Insecurity and Government Inaction
The coalition expressed deep concern over the rampant fear pervading communities as terrorists, bandits, and kidnappers operate with alarming boldness. Innocent lives are lost, families are displaced, and trauma is rife, with governmental responses deemed insufficient and ineffective, according to the collective.
Urgent Call for Protection and Security
Solidarity was extended to families affected by criminal activities as the group demanded immediate actions to secure the release of individuals held captive by gangs across various states, including Oyo, Borno, and Kaduna. The coalition emphasized the necessity of a government committed to the protection of life and property.
Economic Hardship Exacerbates Social Unrest
In addition to security concerns, the economic climate has deteriorated significantly. Policies implemented by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration have led to increased hardships for workers and the impoverished. With rising food prices, escalating transportation costs, and a struggling business environment, many Nigerians find themselves sinking deeper into poverty.
Mobilization Efforts for Nationwide Action
The protests on June 12 are part of a broader movement to compel the government to take decisive steps in tackling insecurity and reversing economic policies that perpetuate poverty. The coalition urges a collective mobilization from all sectors—workers, students, traders, and communities—to advocate for their rights and demand essential reforms.
A Unified Call for Change
The coalition reiterated the importance of unity among Nigerians, emphasizing the significance of collective action to demand safety, dignity, and a decent standard of living. This movement aims to halt the cycles of violence and suffering that have marred the nation for too long.
Escalating Crisis in Various States
Recent events only underscore the urgency of the coalition’s stance. Mass kidnappings are on the rise, exemplified by the tragic deaths of a vice principal and a child during a recent attack in Kogi State. Similarly, armed abductions involving students and teachers have garnered attention in Oyo and Borno States. The continual silence from the federal government regarding these issues has only deepened public frustration.
