Peter Obi Commends Davido for Raising Awareness on Nigeria’s Security Issues
Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress in the upcoming 2027 elections, has expressed admiration for Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, widely known as Davido. The singer utilized his global platform to draw attention to Nigeria’s ongoing security crisis, particularly mass kidnappings, during his recent performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup Countdown Concert.
In a statement posted on his official X account late Sunday, Obi emphasized that Davido’s actions reflect a deep sense of patriotism, transcending entertainment and instigating urgent international attention to Nigeria’s pressing issues.
According to Punch Online, during the concert, Davido took to the stage adorned in a custom leather jacket that featured the names of recently abducted students and teachers from the Oriile Local Government Area of Oyo State. Notably, the jacket displayed a poignant message on the back, reading “Bring Them Home.”
Obi lauded Davido’s influential efforts in shedding light on Nigeria’s security challenges, stating that the singer adeptly highlighted the plight of schoolchildren who have been missing for significant periods. “By raising this issue on such a grand stage, he has transitioned from mere entertainment to a call for action,” Obi remarked.
The former governor of Anambra State underscored the urgency of addressing the deteriorating security conditions across Nigeria, pointing to the government’s inability to manage the crisis effectively. He believes this situation warrants immediate international scrutiny.
Obi has previously lamented the Super Eagles’ absence from the 2026 World Cup, asserting that Nigeria’s failure to qualify is not due to a lack of athletic talent. Instead, he attributes it to poor political leadership that hampers the nurturing of sports talent. “Nigeria’s absence from the World Cup is indicative of a systemic leadership failure,” he pointed out, noting that the country’s artists, despite this setback, continue to gain global recognition.
This assertion gains further weight in the context of notable events, such as the impressive performances of Nigerian musicians at the World Cup, and their substantial representation in international competitions. Obi emphasized the urgent need for political leaders to cultivate an environment conducive to youth development in Nigeria.
Recent reports from PUNCH reveal that several of Nigeria’s top music artists, including Davido, Burna Boy, Rema, and Ira Star, will prominently feature in the official soundtrack album for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The cultural showcase began with a notable performance by Burna Boy and Colombian singer Shakira at the inauguration of Estadio Azteca, signaling a vibrant start to the tournament.
Moreover, Rema made a striking impression at the World Cup’s opening ceremony by collaborating with BLACKPINK’s Lisa and Brazilian superstar Anitta for the live debut of their song “Goals.”
