Secret Service Fires Agent Amid Security Breach Investigation
A spokesperson for the Secret Service announced on Thursday that an officer assigned to J.D. Vance’s security detail has been terminated pending an investigation. This decision comes in response to allegations that the officer may have compromised the vice president’s security protocols.
CNN was the first to report this development, citing sources familiar with the situation who indicated that the agent is under scrutiny for possibly leaking information pertinent to an MS Now report. The report includes alleged complaints from the Secret Service regarding Vance’s travel practices.
Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi confirmed the dismissal of the officer. He stated that “a member of the Vice President’s Protective Division is the subject of an administrative investigation and possible criminal investigation for alleged operational and information security violations.”
While Guglielmi refrained from commenting on the specifics of the case, he emphasized the agency’s commitment to security: “Any behavior that potentially threatens the safety of protected persons will not be tolerated.” Vance’s office chose not to comment on the matter to NBC News.
Reports suggest that internal complaints within the Secret Service arose concerning Vance’s plans to accompany Marine 2 en route to a children’s golf lesson, attended with his son at Joint Base Andrews. That flight was canceled due to inclement weather, according to multiple sources familiar with the travel plans and the complaints from agents.
Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding assignments deemed inappropriate for government resources, according to sources familiar with the situation. NBC News has yet to independently confirm the specifics of the MS Now and CNN reports relating to the agent’s alleged misconduct or dismissal.
Government officials noted that Vance’s travel schedule frequently shifts due to pressing meetings and events, complicating the Secret Service’s planning.
