Rescue Operations Underway After Building Collapse in Port Harcourt
Rescue efforts are still ongoing at the site of a building collapse that occurred on Wednesday morning in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Witnesses reported seeing an elevator in the debris among the wreckage.
Conflicting Reports on Casualties
Authorities are grappling with conflicting information regarding the number of individuals trapped beneath the rubble of a four-storey building located on Peter Odili Street. Initial reports from the police confirmed one fatality, with three additional individuals sustaining injuries and transported to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. However, local residents assert that the situation is far graver, suggesting that over 20 people were inside the structure at the time of the collapse.
Discrepancies in Victim Estimates
Local sources have challenged the police’s estimates, alleging that many more individuals, including residents and vendors, were caught in the building when it fell. While deputy police commissioner Ike Okoro indicated that approximately 10 individuals remained trapped, those with knowledge of the local community argue that the number is likely much higher.
Rescue Response and Efforts
Okoro reported that four people had been successfully extracted from the debris, while further efforts continue. Vincent Wachukwu, acting Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State Ministry of Health, confirmed that medical teams were on-site to provide assistance. He noted that two seriously injured individuals had already been transported to the hospital for treatment.
Onlookers Describe the Incident
Witnesses described the chaos that ensued following the building’s collapse at about 9 a.m. A local resident recounted that cries for help rang out from beneath the rubble, but it took until 11 a.m. for government officials to arrive on the scene to assist with the rescue efforts. The structure was reportedly intended to serve as a hotel, with the remaining high-rise columns initially designed to accommodate an elevator.
Concerns About Building Regulations
Adding to the complexity of the situation, some locals indicated that construction on the building had exceeded approved specifications. Allegations suggest that the owners of the property, who are reportedly residing overseas, had authorization for a three-storey structure but may have proceeded to construct five levels. Building experts onsite noted signs indicating that construction progress had indeed advanced to the fifth floor.
Community Impact and Ongoing Rescue Operations
Among those trapped are reportedly a food vendor, her child, and the significant other of a construction worker. Many of these individuals sought shelter on the ground floor of the building due to economic constraints that prevented them from returning to their homes or finding alternative accommodations. Despite warnings to evacuate the premises, many chose to remain, leading to this tragic incident. As of 5:40 p.m. on Wednesday, rescue operations continued, with various agencies working collaboratively to assist those affected by this devastating event.
