Radio Journalist Survives Violent Attack with the Help of His Dogs
James Ogbu, a 40-year-old journalist with Radio Nigeria from Kaduna State, recounted a harrowing encounter with suspected robbers near his home. In an interview with Daniel Ayantoyi, Ogbu detailed the attack and how his dogs played a crucial role in his survival.
Details of the Attack Unfold
On May 13, 2026, Ogbu, having taken a day off from work, headed to a local store to purchase dog food. Initially planning to ride home on a motorcycle, he opted for another bike when he felt the first rider was acting suspiciously. Shortly after dismounting just a few minutes from his house around 9:30 p.m., he was confronted by two assailants on a bicycle. One attacker struck him on the head with a knife, initiating a violent struggle.
A Desperate Fight for Survival
In the face of the attack, Ogbu instinctively defended himself, managing to headbutt one of the assailants. However, as he grappled with one, the other pelted him with stones, inflicting significant injuries. His screams went unanswered by neighbors, yet his two dogs, hearing the commotion, rushed to assist, barking furiously and biting one of the attackers, which caused them to flee.
Emergency Medical Attention
Once the threat had subsided, Ogbu was rushed to the hospital, where doctors observed extensive bleeding from his nose and eyes. Initial attempts to stop the bleeding were ineffective, and he was later transferred to a private clinic. Reflecting on the ordeal, he expressed immense gratitude for his dogs, who he believes saved his life when help was otherwise unavailable.
The Role of Neighbors and Community Safety
Ogbu noted that while some neighbors came out after the attackers had left, his closest ones were not home during the incident. Concerned about local safety, he had previously established a neighborhood watch to enhance vigilance given the increasing violence in their area. Despite this, he was left feeling isolated during the attack.
Investigation and Ongoing Threats
Following his recovery, Ogbu reported the incident to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO). He described the assailants as intent on incapacitating him to steal his belongings, indicating that their violence seemed deliberate. Although the police detained some individuals for questioning, they were not identified as the attackers. Ogbu remains vigilant, seeking further protection amidst growing concerns for his safety.
Support from the Community and Media
In the aftermath of the attack, Ogbu received considerable support from his workplace and local community. Friends and fellow journalists rallied around him, showing solidarity and concern. However, his primary worry remains his eye injury, which has significantly impacted his vision. He is scheduled for a follow-up examination to assess the damage.
