Trump and Infantino Face Mixed Reception at World Cup Presentation
Donald Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino encountered a mixed reception as they appeared for the trophy presentation following Spain’s victory at the World Cup. As Trump arrived at the stadium via Marine One, his helicopter circled overhead approximately 45 minutes prior to kickoff, setting the stage for his attendance alongside Infantino from an opulent, glass-enclosed suite.
Among those sharing the luxurious vantage point were notable dignitaries, including King Felipe VI of Spain, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. Following the U.S. national anthem, the crowd saw Trump on the stadium’s video screens, where he was met with a smattering of boos. However, the response was not as hostile as it had been at other sporting events during his presidency.
After Spain’s triumphant win, the atmosphere shifted. Boos reverberated throughout the stadium when Trump and Infantino stepped onto the field for the presentation ceremony. A White House pool report noted an increase in ambient noise levels, rising from approximately 78 decibels to 84 decibels upon Trump’s entrance.
Once Trump presented the World Cup trophy to Spain, he attempted to join the podium festivities, but Infantino tactfully guided him away from the celebration. This incident mirrored a similar situation during last summer’s Club World Cup, where Trump had interrupted the celebrations while presenting the trophy to Chelsea, again leaving players visibly embarrassed.
Since his re-election, Trump has made various appearances at major sporting events. His recent engagements include the Super Bowl, the U.S. Open, the Daytona 500, and the Ryder Cup. This year, he was also seen at several golf tournaments, the college football national championship, and Game 3 of the NBA Finals, where he was met with jeers from the New York Knicks’ home crowd.
This occasion marked Trump’s inaugural attendance at a World Cup game this summer, which the United States is co-hosting with Canada and Mexico. Notably, at the previous World Cup final in 2022, the trophy was presented to Lionel Messi and his Argentine teammates by the Qatari Emir and Infantino, while Vladimir Putin awarded the trophy to Kylian Mbappé and the French national team at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Trump holds the distinction of being the first sitting U.S. president to participate in a World Cup final hosted by the United States. His predecessor, Bill Clinton, did not attend the 1994 final, where the trophy was presented by Vice President Al Gore instead.
In addition to his presentation duties, Trump has maintained a close relationship with Infantino. He previously urged the FIFA president to advocate for a review of the controversial red card suspension of U.S. star Folarin Balogun prior to the last-16 match. Although FIFA ultimately revoked Balogun’s suspension, the incident contributed to a tense atmosphere for the U.S. team, which eventually lost to Belgium, squandering their hopes for a stronger World Cup performance.
