DSS Orders Immediate Release of Wrongfully Detained Individual
The Secretary of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, has mandated the immediate release of Nura Idris, a man wrongfully linked to Boko Haram. This decision follows a thorough investigation by the DSS Investigation and Review Committee, which cleared Idris of any collaboration with the terrorist group.
Compensation for Unjust Detention
In addition to securing Idris’s release, the DSS Director-General announced a compensation of 3 million Naira to help him meet his immediate needs. The organization also committed to supporting the businesses of those unjustly detained, a practice that reflects the DSS Directorate’s commitment to justice. Idris was arrested in June 2024 in Suleja, Niger State, by other security agencies based on alleged terrorist connections before being handed over to DSS custody.
Investigation Lifts Charges Against Idris
Upon investigating Idris’s case, the DSS Investigation Committee found no grounds for the charges against him, leading to the Director-General’s decision for immediate release and financial restitution. Following his release, Idris expressed gratitude to the DSS, stating that the compensation would enable him to rebuild his life.
Support for Former Detainees
Nura’s father, Yusuf Idris, welcomed him back and thanked the DSS for their compassion. He pledged that the compensation would be utilized effectively. A source from the DSS added that once a case is registered, they typically follow up with the detainee to provide psychological and medical support, alongside business development tailored to the victim’s preferences.
Ongoing Internal Reviews at DSS
This release forms part of an internal review initiative launched by the DSS last year, aimed at reassessing longstanding cases to ensure that individuals wrongfully detained are not left in custody indefinitely. The ongoing efforts have highlighted the DSS’s dedication to integrity and human rights.
Significant Cases and Compensation Initiatives
The ongoing releases and compensations reflect a broader commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of those in custody. For example, the release of Mr. Sunday Ifedi and his wife Kalista in late 2021 came after they were wrongly associated with the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The DSS awarded Ifedi 10 million Naira in compensation upon his release in December 2025.
Commitment to Rebuilding Lives
Additionally, plans are underway to rebuild a restaurant in memory of Kalista Ifedi, who sadly passed away in custody. This initiative aims to address the wrongful charges that led to her arrest. Since the start of this review process, over 30 cases have been resolved, resulting in more than 300 million Naira awarded in compensation. The DSS is demonstrating that the safeguarding of national security should go hand in hand with protecting the rights of individuals.
Broader Efforts to Restore Public Trust
The DSS has been proactive in rectifying wrongful detentions. For instance, after releasing businesswoman Mrs. Chineze Ozoadibe in October 2025 with a compensation package, they also released Mr. Kenneth Okechukwu Nwafor, arrested in July 2022 under similar mistaken allegations. Alongside Nwafor, several others wrongfully associated with IPOB were released, each receiving initial financial support to aid their reintegration into society. This approach is pivotal in restoring public trust and confidence in the agency’s operations.
