Collaboration Essential in Combating Drug Trafficking in Edo State
The Edo State Government, alongside the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other stakeholders, emphasized the importance of innovative strategies to combat rising drug trafficking and abuse during a gathering on Friday at the Government House Festival Hall in Benin City. This assembly was part of the observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
Thematic Focus on Global Drug Issues
This year’s theme, “The Global Drug Problem: Persistent Problems, Emerging Challenges, and Innovative Responses,” resonated throughout the event. Speakers highlighted an urgent need for collaborative methodologies to address the complexities surrounding drug issues both within Edo State and nationally.
Governor’s Commitment to a Drug-Free Edo State
Edo State Governor Senator Monday Okpebolo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against drug trafficking. Represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Drug Policy and Trafficking Control, Andrew Efe, he asserted that collective efforts are vital in the fight against drug-related crimes.
A Call for Innovative Justice
Governor Okpebolo warned drug traffickers that they would face serious consequences. He stated, “If drug traffickers believe they can outsmart law enforcement, they will soon discover that we are equally innovative in delivering justice. Edo State is not a sanctuary for drug trafficking or abuse. We will locate and confiscate illegal substances, ensuring that offenders face the full extent of the law.” His message stressed that there will be no tolerance for illicit activities.
Community Involvement in Drug Prevention
He further highlighted the necessity of community involvement, emphasizing that the prevention of drug abuse begins at home. Parents, schools, and religious institutions should integrate anti-drug education into their teachings, fostering a culture of awareness and responsibility among the youth.
NDLEA Commander Discusses the Drug Landscape
NDLEA Commander for Edo State, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, addressed the ongoing challenges in combatting drug trafficking. He pointed out the rise of synthetic drugs and the impact of the dark web, underscoring the need for a multifaceted response from various stakeholders. Ofoyeju appealed to parents and community members to engage proactively in the fight against drug abuse, citing factors like ignorance, poverty, and peer pressure that drive many young people toward substances.
Statistics Highlight Drug Trafficking Efforts
During the event, Ofoyeju shared mid-year statistics from the NDLEA, revealing the arrest of 289 suspected drug traffickers—176 men and 113 women—and the seizure of over 14,705 kilograms of narcotics. Additionally, 35,008 kilograms of drugs were destroyed, including substantial quantities of cannabis from plantations. He reported that 52 individuals had been convicted of drug trafficking, while 135 people received counseling for drug-related issues.
Addressing Emerging Challenges through Smart Strategies
Mr. Edesiri Anani Okpeboro, Coordinator of the Office of the President and Chairman of the Edo State Narcotics Control Board, stressed the urgency of adapting strategies to confront new challenges. He pointed out that drug-related issues now penetrate the digital landscape, affecting children through social media. Failure to innovate in our approach could jeopardize the wellbeing of today’s youth, he warned. This sentiment was echoed by various speakers, including Miss Ed International 2026, Bossy Vivian, who advocated for social change and continuous discourse about the harmful effects of substance abuse on individuals and families.
The gathering also featured messages of support from the Edo State Police Commissioner and the Commander of the 4th Brigade of the Nigerian Army, reinforcing a unified front in addressing this pressing issue. A short play on drug abuse prevention was performed by members of the National Youth Service Narcotics Control Club in Ikpova Oha, alongside a quiz competition that highlighted the importance of drug awareness among schoolchildren.
