EFCC Arrests Energy Commission Chief Over Alleged Mismanagement of Funds
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken into custody Mustapha Abdullahi, the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), in connection with funds totaling N701 billion associated with the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), an alliance of governors from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Former Power Minister Sentenced for Fraud
In a significant turn of events, former Minister of Power, Mamman Saleh, was sentenced yesterday to 75 years in prison for money laundering and fraud amounting to N33.8 billion.
Background on Abdullahi’s Arrest
Abdullahi was apprehended in Abuja after he failed to respond to two separate invitations from the EFCC concerning a financial investigation involving him. Reports indicate that the case may relate to allegations of financial mismanagement against PGF Chairman and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma.
Discontent Among APC Governors
Uzodinma is accused of failing to adequately account for over N700 billion in funds, raising tensions among APC governors. While some express confidence in his leadership, others allege mismanagement of funds purportedly allocated for the upcoming 2027 campaign. There have been allegations suggesting that these funds were intended for distribution among APC presidential candidates, yet disagreements remain regarding the execution.
Support for Uzodinma Amid Controversy
Approximately 18 APC governors recently extended their support to Uzodinma via a vote of confidence, defending his leadership amidst the unfolding controversy. Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, who also serves as the PGF vice-chairman, labeled the recent tensions as “a mild misunderstanding,” dismissing reports of discord within the ranks of APC governors.
Ongoing Investigation and Broader Implications
Despite public proclamations of unity, the issue is currently under investigation, focusing on the usage of the funds in question. Additionally, a former southeast minister, who recently resigned amid allegations of forgery, is believed to be involved in the inquiry related to Abdullahi.
Saleh’s Legal Troubles and Sentence Details
Former Minister Saleh’s 75-year prison sentence, handed down by Judge James Omotosho in the Federal High Court in Abuja, was based on convictions for multiple counts of fraud. The judge assigned consecutive sentences without the option of a fine, and the ruling directed security agencies nationwide to apprehend Saleh wherever located.
Court Findings and Prosecution Evidence
The court’s findings last week confirmed Saleh’s guilt in connection with fraud involving the Mambilla and Zunger hydropower projects. The prosecution presented 17 witnesses and 43 pieces of evidence, asserting that Saleh misappropriated over N22 billion. The presiding judge noted that the prosecution’s case was compelling and established beyond reasonable doubt that significant funds were diverted for personal gain.
