Focus on Grassroots Governance
Assuming office on July 15, 2024, Prime Minister Ovork has prioritized addressing essential developmental needs within local communities, aiming to establish a foundation for sustainable grassroots governance that effectively supports residents.
Infrastructure Improvements Enhance Accessibility
Among the completed projects, the council has successfully rehabilitated a deteriorated section of the Ojede-Ijeri road, undertaken temporary repairs on the Olehu-Emede-Oloromo-Otor-Iyede corridor, and improved access by constructing culverts along the Ogbemudia road in Olehu, benefiting residents, farmers, and traders alike.
Renovations Modernize Parliamentary Facilities
The administration has also focused on enhancing its governmental infrastructure, renovating the residences of key officials, including the Speaker of Parliament and the Chief Human Resources Officer. The Parliamentary Secretariat received upgrades, including a modern gatehouse and enhanced security features.
Solar Power Initiatives for Sustainable Governance
In a move toward sustainability, solar power generation equipment has been installed at both the parliamentary secretariat and the president’s official residence, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint while enhancing operational efficiency.
Support for Local Commerce
To bolster local commerce, the city council invested in the renovation of the Olomoro and Ideze Ili markets, equipping traders with modern stalls and secured storage spaces, which will provide a more conducive environment for business operations.
Strengthening Security and Community Health
The government has also initiated several projects aimed at enhancing security, including the construction of a new administrative secretariat and a modern police station in Enwe. In response to a cholera outbreak in Ikpide-Iri, the city council collaborated with the Omodu Foundation to offer free medical services, distribute medical equipment to health centers, and conduct a public awareness campaign on HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases in partnership with the World Health Organization.
Boosting Agricultural and Economic Growth
The local government is facilitating agricultural production by distributing improved cassava stalks across eleven districts and establishing demonstration farms for crops such as pepper, potato, and watermelon. Additionally, the council has allocated R11 million in grants to support small businesses, aimed at invigorating economic activity and raising household incomes.
Community Conflict Resolution and Environmental Health Efforts
In efforts to promote security and peacebuilding, the Chairman’s administration has mediated conflicts in the Ideze-Ili and Oromoro regions, collaborating with traditional rulers and security agencies to tackle safety concerns in Emede and other areas. The council also continues with regular environmental health training and organizes annual Children’s Day celebrations to foster social inclusion among youth.
With ongoing projects still in the pipeline, residents and stakeholders remain hopeful that the initiatives implemented over the past two years have set the stage for improved service delivery and renewed trust in grassroots governance. As the second half of his term approaches, the administration is expected to focus on completing outstanding projects and harmonizing development efforts throughout the municipality.
