Sonny Baker’s Potential Test Debut Against New Zealand
England is contemplating granting Sonny Baker his Test debut at Lord’s after the 23-year-old fast bowler was named in the 12-man squad for the first Test against New Zealand starting Thursday.
Just days before the match, England’s head coach Brendon McCullum suggested Baker could be included, commenting on the squad’s strategy: “We’ll assess whether we want to add more air speed or if we should stick to the bowlers who have proven effective at Lord’s, particularly those who can exploit the overhead conditions.”
England’s Squad for the Opening Test
England’s selected squad includes notable players such as Ben Stokes (captain), Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethel, Harry Brook, Ben Duckett, Emilio Gay, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Jamie Smith (wicketkeeper), and Josh Tan.
Baker will vie for a seam bowling position alongside all-rounder Ben Stokes, Josh Tan, Gus Atkinson, and the returning Ollie Robinson, who is set to make his first Test appearance in more than two years.
Bashir Set for Inclusion as England Opts for Spin
McCullum confirmed the strategy to include spinners in the lineup, with Shoaib Bashir expected to secure a place in the playing XI. Bashir’s presence will provide balance with his leg-spin, complemented by the additional batting strength of Rehan Ahmed.
Despite being England’s leading spinner since 2024, Bashir missed significant matches last season due to injury, including the latter part of the home series against India and the recent Ashes in Australia.
Highlights of Sonny Baker’s Bowling Style
McCullum praised Baker’s attributes ahead of what could be a memorable debut: “He brings excitement to the game with impressive speed and aggression.” The coach emphasized Baker’s unique approach, stating that his delivery style is characterized by intensity and dynamic pace. “He swings the ball effectively and has the potential to bowl at speeds approaching 90 mph,” added McCullum.
England has also secured another debutant, Emilio Gay, who had an outstanding County Championship season, averaging 78.85 with 552 runs in six matches.
Emilio Gay: Growth in the Face of Challenges
“His remarkable run-scoring at the county level has earned him this spot,” McCullum noted. “However, adapting to international cricket introduces new challenges, both on and off the field. Our aim over the next couple of days is to ensure Emilio steps onto the pitch with clarity and self-assurance while staying true to his successful playing style.”
Jacob Bethel Ready for First Test Despite IPL Challenges
Meanwhile, Jacob Bethel has been cleared to play despite recent struggles during the Indian Premier League, where he suffered a finger injury. McCullum emphasized Bethel’s resilience, noting, “His fingers are fine, and we are optimistic about his performance as he looks to build on a successful Ashes campaign, where he notched his maiden century in Sydney.”
With enthusiasm for the upcoming match, McCullum expressed confidence in Bethel’s preparation: “He approaches the game with great focus and thoughtfulness, and I believe he will rise to the occasion without any excuses.”
