Significance of MSMEs in Africa
Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are crucial to Africa’s economic landscape, significantly contributing to employment, gross domestic product (GDP), industrialization, and food security. With around 125 million registered and unregistered MSMEs, the continent represents over 25% of the global total. Yet, these enterprises encounter numerous structural challenges, including restricted access to finance, limited production capabilities, and a shortage of skilled workers, particularly in fields related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Additionally, they face hurdles in terms of intellectual property (IP) protection, regulatory complexities, inadequate information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure, and susceptibility to external shocks.
Opportunities in the Fourth Industrial Revolution
The Fourth Industrial Revolution offers MSMEs a valuable opportunity to address these challenges through advancements in ICT and innovation. However, many enterprises remain marginalized from digital transformation due to a fragmented ecosystem and a widening digital divide. Strategic investments in science, technology, and innovation (STI) are critical for enhancing the productivity and resilience of MSMEs while enabling their integration into global value chains. Supporting these enterprises through ICT is essential for generating decent employment opportunities and tackling pressing issues such as unemployment, inequality, and low productivity, particularly among Africa’s increasingly youthful population.
The Role of Education and Intellectual Property
Integrating STEM into educational frameworks and effectively leveraging intellectual property rights are vital components for realizing a digital and inclusive future. To this end, the United Nations Office of the Special Adviser for Africa (OSAA) is organizing a virtual webinar on September 4, 2025. This event aims to discuss how STI can empower MSMEs to harness the potential of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. It will also present preliminary findings from OSAA’s draft policy brief and serve as a critical platform for dialogue. Insights from the webinar will inform the final version of this policy document.
Webinar Objectives and Focus Areas
The webinar has a threefold objective: to generate knowledge, facilitate knowledge sharing, and promote collaboration among stakeholders focused on investing in African MSMEs that are at the forefront of the Fourth Industrial Revolution through ICT and innovation. Discussions will revolve around the role of STI in enhancing MSME productivity, innovation, and resilience, while addressing their challenges. The event seeks to pinpoint sustainable strategies that bolster the capacity for innovation and promotion within these enterprises by fostering partnerships between government entities and the private sector, including MSMEs.
Raising Awareness and Aligning Ecosystems
This timely event will serve as a vital forum to highlight both the advantages and challenges associated with leveraging STI—especially regarding STEM education and IP—to advance MSMEs in Africa. Participants will explore how the continent’s policy frameworks, investment channels, and innovation ecosystems can be strategically aligned to empower MSMEs as key drivers of the Fourth Industrial Revolution across Africa.
Who Can Attend
The event is open to government officials from all United Nations Member States and the African Union, as well as representatives from regional organizations, the UN system, bilateral and multilateral partners, and the OSAA Knowledge Network. Additionally, women’s and youth groups, civil society representatives, the private sector, and academics are encouraged to participate.
