Strategic Growth Plans for Enugu State’s Economy
Enugu State is poised to introduce a new airline while also moving forward with the concession of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, a strategic initiative aimed at boosting the region’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion by 2031. Mr. Chidibele Oniyah, the Secretary to the State Government, shared these insights during the Renewed Hope Media Tour at the airport on Tuesday.
Aviation as a Catalyst for Economic Transformation
During the tour, Oniyah detailed the state government’s vision for leveraging aviation, tourism, and agriculture as pillars for economic growth. He emphasized that the concession of the airport aligns with the broader strategy of Governor Peter Mba’s administration to reposition Enugu as a vital economic hub in the South East.
Tourism and Air Transport Synergy
Oniyah anticipates a significant rise in tourism in the coming years, asserting that air transport will be critical to facilitating that growth. He articulated the state’s intent to attract a diverse mix of tourists, investors, and businesses, noting that reliance solely on private airlines could hinder efficient transport to Enugu.
Launch of Enugu Air
This concern led to the establishment of Enugu Air, a new state-owned airline designed to enhance connectivity. “We cannot depend entirely on third-party airlines and their schedules if we expect people to visit Enugu,” Oniyah explained. The airline will initially operate a fleet of six aircraft, marking the first phase of this ambitious project.
Enhanced Infrastructure for Tourism Development
Pursuing its tourism objectives, the government plans to revitalize key tourist destinations within the state. Oniyah affirmed that improved access to these attractions will facilitate better travel for visitors and enhance investments in hospitality. “Efficient transport options are essential for encouraging tourism,” he stated.
Cargo Terminal to Boost Agricultural Development
In addition to supporting tourism, the airport’s infrastructure will play a significant role in advancing agricultural initiatives through enhanced cargo transport capabilities. Oniyah highlighted plans for a new cargo terminal, which will streamline the movement of goods and agricultural products, thus creating numerous business opportunities. “This terminal will be pivotal for agricultural investments by enabling efficient transport of goods,” he noted.
Private Sector Collaboration and Future Steps
The state intends to adopt a private sector-led approach to ensure the efficiency and sustainability of both the airline and airport projects. Experts with industry knowledge will contribute to the governance structure of the airline, effectively mitigating challenges associated with direct government oversight of commercial enterprises. Oniyah also provided an update on the airport concession process, noting that October has been designated for the next phase of activities, allowing concessionaires and contractors to commence work on site.
Support from Federal Authorities
The Secretary acknowledged the critical support from President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Ministry of Aviation, which facilitated the transition of the airport initiative from planning to implementation. The Federal Executive Committee has approved the concession of Akanu Ibiam International Airport as part of efforts to attract private investment in airport infrastructure. In January, Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo signed a concession agreement with Aero Alliance for the airport’s operation, which will remain under federal ownership while being managed by the concessionaire. This project continues to attract public interest as both the Federal Government and Enugu State work together to position the airport as a major gateway for business, tourism, and trade in the South East.
